PETITION FOR ACTION TO STOP THE PLIGHT OF WELSH PONIES

Every year in the United Kingdom vast numbers of native ponies suffer and die from starvation and neglect resulting from uncontrolled, unregulated over-breeding.  Fillies that are under-age and under-weight die giving birth to foals that they should not be carrying.  Mares repeatedly give birth in squalid conditions until they die from infection or exhaustion.  Colt foals find themselves unwanted and neglected and are either left to fend for themselves, dying eventually from starvation on over-grazed, inhospitable land, or are rounded up and sold through markets and eventually end up being processed for pet food.  Others go on to fertilise the next generation of fillies and so the whole horrific cycle of suffering goes on and on unabated.

Nowhere is this more prevalent and more deplorable than in Wales, where native Welsh Ponies have been suffering in this way for decades.   The ponies of Wales are a national treasure, but their mass over-breeding is a national tragedy of immense proportions.  The situation is perpetuated by the irresponsible breeding practices of certain studs and pony farmers, who appear perennially to evade justice despite repeatedly brining sub-standard ponies to so-called ‘dispersal’ and ‘reduction’ sales.

We at the Responsible Equine Breeding Society (link is to facebook page, webpage currently under development) have begun a petition

This petition calls for urgent intervention to bring about:

  • A drastic reduction in the number of Welsh Ponies being bred in an unregulated, uncontrolled manner, and
  • Total elimination of all neglect and consequent suffering in the breeding of Welsh Ponies howsoever caused.

It will be presented to all government agencies, welfare organisations, breed societies and others who have the power to bring about change and to
STOP THE PLIGHT OF WELSH PONIES.

I have been led to believe that the image to the above is of a Criccieth mare. She seems to have died half way through giving birth due to her appauling condition. I applogise if the graphic nature of this image caused you any distress but I think it's important that this is out in the open so we can do something about it.
