NO BAIL FOR TWO POLICE OFFICERS WHO ARE ACCUSED OF RAPE ON A 27 YEAR OLD FARMWORKER

We call on the National Prosecuting Authority and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate to oppose bail in the case of the two (2) police officers accused of the brutal rape, assault, and kidnapping of a 27-year-old seasonal farmworker. If they are released on bail, it will send the wrong message that police officers can act with impunity and face no consequences.

It is alleged that the woman was picked up by the officers, and instead of taking her to her destination, they took her to a secluded location. It is further alleged that they raped her repeatedly. Such horrific actions, if proven true, reflect a complete abuse of power by those entrusted to protect and serve the public.

This incident is deeply concerning and highlights the ongoing issue of law enforcement officers violating the very laws they are meant to uphold. Given the seriousness of the charges, we urge the judiciary to consider the gravity of the allegations, the severe trauma inflicted on the victim, and the broader impact on public confidence in the justice system. Currently, there is a disturbing rise in cases of police brutality and sexual violence in the Western Cape. The courts must take decisive action to ensure that perpetrators, regardless of their position, are held accountable.

This betrayal of public trust is unacceptable. No one is above the law, and those who misuse their authority to harm others must face the full consequences of their actions. We believe that the accused officers have a case to answer and must remain in custody for the duration of the trial to prevent any risk of intimidation, interference, or further harm to the victim and the community. Justice must not only be done but must also be seen to be done.
