NOLL FLYG UNDER 500 KM

Dear Eva Wiberg Vice Chancellor of the University of Gothenburg,

During 2018 The University of Gothenburg made over 8000 flights to destinations within a 500 km range, making up 7%(1) of the University's annual CO2 emissions measured. In other words, GU employees have, despite more climate-friendly options such as trains, taken flights to cities like Stockholm, Oslo and Copenhagen.

As GU students, we find this unacceptable. It is time for Swedish Universities to act in line with climate science and practice what they teach. That is why we call for a new, enforceable travel policy that prohibits GU employees from taking business-related flights under 500 km to their final destination. 

Universities have an important leadership role to play in acting in line with the 1.5° goal of the Paris agreement and setting climate-friendly policy examples for the rest of society. A recent European Investment Bank survey found 3 in 5 Europeans would support an outright ban on short-haul flights(2). While a more effective carbon levy system as outlined in the GU Climate Framework Working group report(3) would be a step in the right direction, in the case of flights under 500 km we advocate a ban rather than a financial disincentive system. An outright ban would be uniformly and equitably implemented, without regard to the particular financial capacity of the decision-making institutions, thus also reducing emissions now rather than paying to pollute. The only exception would be any certified medical or other unavoidable circumstance which causes short flights to be necessary.

Under 2018 stod Göteborgs Universitet för över 8000 flygresor till destinationer inom en 500 kms räckvidd. Dessa flygresor stod för ca 7%(1) av verksamhetens koldioxidutsläpp år 2018. Med andra ord, anställda på GU har tagit flyg till städer som Stockholm, Oslo och Köpenhamn  trots att klimatvänliga alternativ varit tillgängliga.

Som studenter på GU anser vi att detta är oacceptabelt. Det är hög tid för svenska universitet att följa vetenskapen de förespråkar och leva som de lär. Därför kräver vi en ny policy som förhindrar anställda på universitetet att flyga i tjänsten i de fall där flygresan ligger under 500 km till deras slutdestination. 

Universiteten har en viktig roll att spela för att samhället ska kunna nå Paris-avtalets rekommenderade mål och hålla den globala medeltemperaturen under 1.5°C. En viktig väg dit är att sätta policys och föregå med gott exempel i utvecklingen.En nyligen publicerad studie av ett europeiskt finansinstitut visade på att 3 av 5 europeer skulle ge stöd till ett förbud mot korta flygresor(2). Även om ett system med mer långtgående klimatväxling, såsom GUs arbetsgrupp för Klimatramverket föreslagit(3), är ett steg i rätt riktning önskar vi se ett förbud mot flyg under 500 km som komplement till övriga ekonomiska styrmedel. Ett förbud skulle ha likvärdig påverkan över hela verksamheten, gynnar inte de institutioner med större finansiell kapacitet, och minskar utsläpp drastiskt istället för att tillåta utsläpp under mer påkostade former. Vi vill lyfta att undantag som särskilda sjukdomsfall, funktionshinder eller andra situationer där korta flygresor kvarstår som enda alternativ borde ses som undantag till förbudet.
