Petition for Haiti

Dear President or Head of Government:

I call on my government to meet its commitments towards Haiti and step up support for the country.  After the devastating January 12, 2010 earthquake, UN member-states and international partners, at a donors conference in New York two months later, pledged $5.3 billion to help Haiti’s long-term recovery. So far, only half this money has been disbursed.

The country, already fragile before the earthquake, has no chance to escape poverty and move towards democracy, human rights and human development without special support from the international community.

This support should not undermine Haiti’s sovereignty.  The priorities, in order of importance, should be:

1 - Construction of housing, schools and hospitals, as part of a national housing plan, itself part of a nationwide land-use program.

2 – Building new infrastructure (roads, ports, airports, water supply, energy).

3 - Agricultural production.

4 - Environmental protection (reforestation, building storm drains).

5 – Improving urban areas.

6 – Strengthening the Haitian government and public institutions.

We wish you the very best in 2012.
