RED HET STERREBOS

Als het aan VDL Nedcar en de Provincie Limburg ligt, wordt vanaf september 2021 driekwart van het 200 jaar oude Sterrebos gekapt. Het bos moet wijken voor de onzekere uitbreiding van de autofabriek.
Dat mag natuurlijk niet gebeuren!

Het Sterrebos is een uniek bos van zo’n 7 hectare tussen Born en Nieuwstadt. Omdat het niet wordt onderhouden en niet toegankelijk is voor het publiek is het een ideaal toevluchtsoord voor allerlei soorten dieren.

De kap wordt weliswaar ‘gecompenseerd’ met de aanplant van zo’n 13 hectare nieuw bos, maar veel soorten zullen alsnog hun habitat verliezen, mede door de grotere toegankelijkheid van het nieuwe bos voor recreatiedoeleinden. Bovendien zal het meer dan een eeuw duren om hetzelfde CO2-opslagniveau te bereiken als het huidige bos.

Ook kunnen er grote vraagtekens worden geplaatst bij het besluitvormingsproces rondom de uitbreiding. Wel is duidelijk dat persoonlijke belangen van betrokken (oud)bestuurders een rol hebben gespeeld bij de compensatieplannen.

Hoewel de toekomst van de autofabriek onzeker is - het contract met de huidige opdrachtgever van VDL NedCar loopt in 2023 af en er heeft zich nog geen nieuwe opdrachtgever gemeld - zal in september 2021 worden begonnen met het kappen van het Sterrebos. De aanleg van een nieuwe randweg is daarentegen wel afhankelijk van de definitieve beslissing tot uitbreiding van de fabriek.
Het Sterrebos is te waardevol om te verliezen, al helemaal wanneer er zoveel onduidelijkheid bestaat over de besluitvorming rondom de uitbreiding.

Werkgelegenheid
Het belang van het behoud van het Sterrebos lijkt te botsen met het belang van het behoud van werkgelegenheid Limburg. 
Gezien de huidige ecologische- en klimaatcrisis zal ook VDL Nedcar moeten omschakelen naar een duurzamere of andersoortige productielijn en hiermee werken aan een betere en leefbare toekomst voor ons en onze (klein)kinderen. Dit schept juist nieuwe kansen voor de werkgelegenheid in Limburg. De medewerkers van VDL Nedcar zullen hierbij uiteraard  begeleid, opgeleid en/of omgeschoold moeten worden.
Het is belangrijk dat we ons gezamenlijk inzetten voor een eerlijke transitie voor deze werknemers naar duurzame banen binnen VDL Nedcar of daarbuiten.

Wat kunt u doen?
Uw hulp is nodig om VDL Nedcar duidelijk te maken dat de uitbreiding van de fabriek ten koste van het Sterrebos niet door mag gaan en niet wordt gesteund door een groot deel van de bevolking. Laten we aantonen dat de strijd voor het behoud van het Sterrebos hand in hand kan gaan met de strijd voor fatsoenlijk betaalde en duurzame banen!
Doe mee door deze petitie te ondertekenen en te delen en VDL Nedcar en de Provincie Limburg te vragen het Sterrebos te behouden en een grote stap te zetten naar een echt duurzame toekomst!

SAVE THE STERREBOS

If VDL Nedcar and the Province of Limburg have their way, three quarters of the 200 year old Sterrebos will be cut down as of September 2021. The forest must make way for the uncertain expansion of the car factory.
Of course this cannot be allowed to happen!

The Sterrebos is a unique forest of 7 hectares between Born and Nieuwstadt. As it is not maintained and not accessible to the public it is an ideal refuge for all kinds of animals.

Although the felling will be ‘compensated’ by 13 hectares of new planting, many species will still lose their habitat, partly due to the greater accessibility of the new forest for recreational purposes. Furthermore it will take over a century to reach the same CO2 storage level as the current forest.

In addition, the decision-making process surrounding the expansion is highly questionable. It is clear, however, that personal interests of (former) provincial officials have played a role in the compensation plans.

Although the future of the car plant is uncertain - the contract with the current contractor for VDL NedCar expires in 2023 and no new contractor has yet come forward - the felling of the Sterrebos is to start in September 2021. The construction of a new peripheral road, however, depends on whether the expansion of the factory will actually take place. 
The Sterrebos is too valuable to lose, especially when there is so much uncertainty about the decision-making process for the expansion.

Employment
The importance of preserving the Sterrebos seems to conflict with the importance of preserving employment in Limburg.  
Given the current ecological and climate crisis, VDL Nedcar, too, will have to switch to a more sustainable or different type of production line to work towards a better and more liveable future for us and our (grand)children. This actually creates new opportunities for employment in Limburg. VDL Nedcar employees will of course have to be assisted, educated and/or re-educated in this process.
It is important that we work together to ensure a fair transition for these employees to sustainable jobs within VDL Nedcar or elsewhere.

What can you do?
We need your help to make it clear to VDL Nedcar that this expansion at the expense of the Sterrebos cannot be allowed to continue and is not supported by a large part of the population.Let's show that the fight for the preservation of the Sterrebos can go hand in hand with the fight for decently paid and sustainable jobs!
