Philosophers for Future

I am a high school chemistry teacher with a Ph.D. in philosophy (SUNY Albany). I am constantly looking for ways to get my high school students to engage with philosophical issues. Teaching science I am well aware of the lack of scientific literacy that is often fueled by, to use your terms, an ideology that breeds science skepticism. If there is anything I can do at the level of secondary education, I am all in.

Because I agree with everything that is stated above.

This is by far the most important issue there is in the world today, and every one of us should be working on it.

Are contributions to climate degradation (e.g. evasion or repeal of climate protection laws) crimes against humanity?

We researchers should fly less ourselves, organise more events on-line (along the lines of e.g. Consciousness Online), and put pressure on academic institutions and funding agencies to decrease flying and other greenhouse gas-costly activities. Radical change is required at every level--the status quo in academia will have to go too.

Weaponized skepticism in the face of climate change is a danger to animal and human life, a danger that is not yet widely enough recognized.

Climate change is now a full-blown climate emergency, one that threatens civilization itself. If philosophers don't speak out about it, they are not doing their jobs properly. Full stop.

Climate change is one of the most challenging issues the world faces and philosophers should do what they can to help address it.

I'm signing because our exploitive relation with the rest of nature, intertwined with our exploitation of Indigenous people and their lands, needs to be profoundly questioned. These were choices, not inevitabilities. We need history and philosophy to understand when those choices were made originally and how they became unquestionable. And finally, how do we think and act our way out of them.

Brian MacLean (Toronto, 2019-06-05)

We need to take action to address climate change and other forms of ecological devastation immediately.

I am a student of philosophy so my Fridays should contribute twice as much.

Lukas Schöppl (Vienna, 2019-06-23)

I'm signing because the climate crisis threatens our all well-being. However, despite scientifc fact most people ignore this enourmously urgent problem - irrationally. Philosophers should take their responsibility and help to reflect as well as inform on climate change. Apart from the ethical dimension, philosophy of science can help to enhance our understanding of climate science.

Lukas Kob (Magdeburg, 2019-06-23)

I'm signing this because climate change is-- in my eyes-- the most significant environmental and moral challenge of our time, and that we all owe eachother and future generations to do our part to help fight it.

Arthur Obst (Seattle, 2019-06-24)
