The informal settlement provides cover for criminal activity. Hygiene is a real issue and human faeces is commonly found all obet the place. The living conditions are horrendous. Even if low cost housing werr erected that would be better.

Russell Hooker (Johannesburg, 2020-11-17)

I am a regular cyclist using the area, but it has become prone to attacks and extremely dangerous

Willem Krul (Johannesburg, 2020-11-17)

This situation must be addressed.

Steve Price (Sandron, 2020-11-17)

I have seen the exponential growth of people inhabiting this piece of land, polluting the river (a health hazard) and all the plastic collection (a fire hazard)

The squatters in the delta

Corinne Hourrides (Johannesburg, 2020-11-17)

There’s a growing population in front of my house in the park and I’m very concerned about safety issues and the fact that my property value will decrease after I have recently invested a lot in a total renovation

Shireen Husain (Jhb, 2020-11-17)

I worry about my family’s safety with so many vagrants living in the spruit so close to our house

Shannon Thomson (Johannesburg , 2020-11-17)

It is about time! Thank you for starting this petition.

Margot Glyn (Johannesburg, 2020-11-17)

We are proud of our area, devoting personal time and resources to keep it a welcoming environment for all who live there but the squatters are firstly breaking the law by setting up house there, they have no sanitation so they’re polluting the river and the area around it. I expect the ruling party to uphold the interests of the rate payers in their area

Antony Barker (Johannesburg , 2020-11-18)

Town planning is being totally disregarded

Harris Charalambous (Johannesburg, 2020-11-18)

Our green spaces are a treasure to our city and should be protected for future generations. Illegal occupation and disregard for bylaws cannot be allowed to continue if we want to preserve a law abiding status of our city.

Sonja Carshagen (Johannesburg, 2020-11-18)

Concerns documented in the petition.

Jonathan Sims (Johannesburg, 2020-11-18)

This camp is not how humans should be living it’s in dignified and unhygienic for the people living there plus the residents who live on the boundaries

Lois Evans (Jhb, 2020-11-18)

Increased criminal activity due to illegal occupations.

Stuart Pithey (Rivonia, 2020-11-18)

There is noise and comotion, the rat count has increased exponentially, vagrant crows have moved into a carefully controlled well run Green area destroying the important local habitat and there are nervous tenants concerned with the security threat

John Pearse (Sandton, 2020-11-18)

The lack of sanitation and overcrowding, with accompanying risks to health, are escalating rapidly

Lynn Enraght-Moony (Johannesburg , 2020-11-18)

I am a user of the spruit MTB

Craig Corbett (Blairgowrie, 2020-11-18)

The informal dwellers require to have suitable living space allocated to them by the the authorities.

Danaselvi Pillay (Hurlingham Sandton, 2020-11-18)

The controlling and reform of the informal waste recycling industry is crucial to prevent the destruction of all the open spaces and parks of our city.

Mark Lederman (Johannesburg , 2020-11-18)

The problem is exacerbating

Marion Koseph (Sandton, 2020-11-18)

rob Horsman (boksburg , 2020-11-18)

Of the dangers of health hazards and security.

Teboho Mokoena (Johannesburg , 2020-11-18)

For all the reasons listed above

Susan Niehaus (Johannesburg, 2020-11-18)

This is a health risk, safety risk and a noise disturbance. The river is probably used for sewerage, the number of people diagnosed with bilharzia in the neighbourhood is shocking (dogs play in river on walks). They used to burn plastic, which they are trying to stop unsuccessfully. I personally do not feel safe walking/ running through Field and study park on my own.

Maryna van Niekerk (Johannesburg, 2020-11-19)

This area is deteriorating day by day

Peter Joseph (Sandton , 2020-11-19)

Increase in petty crime in the area

Melissa Elstob (Sandton, 2020-11-21)

I'm signing because I want to prevent a major problem of Disease spreading specially Covid 19 within the existing poor conditions existing due to Illegal Land Settlement.

MJRoger Bax de Keating (Sandton, 2020-11-21)

I use the park regularly, and the squatter camp is disgusting. I am also worried about security, and the pollution of the entire area

Bev McLuckie (Sandton, 2020-11-22)

I live vin Parkmore and these people need assistance and removing them would make the authorities deal with them properly

Catherine Shimmin (Sandton, 2020-11-23)

I feel a safe environment is important and as an avid user of the Braamfontein Spruit the area in consideration has been a long standing dangerous area. The municipality needs to step in to provide a material recycling facility for the recyclers to collect and sort their materials in a safe and environmentally sound manner. The material sorting work is being undertaken informally with non-recyclable waste being burnt in the area near the river and is an environmental hazard.

Christopher O'Donovan (Johannesburg, 2020-11-23)

I’m a property owner in the neighbourhood and this poses both health and security risks!

Izak Van Niekerk (Sandhurst Ext4, 2020-11-23)

The value of my property is deteriorating due to the proximity of the squatter camp.

Tonilee Lutz (Sandton, 2020-11-23)

It is an environmental and human catastrophe and breaks all by laws pertaining to this

Simon Grose (Johannesburg , 2020-11-26)

I am signing because I walk in the field and study park on a daily basis and am concerned for my safety

Donna Boyd (Parkmore, 2020-12-02)

It is not right that people should live in such conditions, and they really do not have a right to commandeer public land.

Moira Marcelino (Sandton, 2020-12-06)

The beautiful sprit is no longer safe to ride or walk in

Samantha Cliffe (Johannesburg , 2020-12-09)

We make use of the Field and Stream Park on a daily basis with our dog to walk and exercise, for many years now. We are very disturbed by the massive illegal habitation and the concomitant ecological and environmental degradation , posing many health issues.

Robert Mohr (Sandton, 2020-12-14)

I frequently visit the Field and Study Centre with my dogs, and have recently had an incident with glass cutting my dog's paw due to glass been thrown in the river, it is dangerous, and makes the natural atmosphere of the park unpleasant

Samantha Dore (Johannesburg, 2020-12-29)

I visit the Sandton Field and Study very regularly and it is slowly deteriorating and feels less safe

Jacqui Khoury (Sandton , 2021-01-05)

As a regular dog walker there is a feeling of insecurity unless we walk in a crowd. The amount of rubbish piling up on the other side of the river is appalling and as a result the river and its banks is in a dreadful state, an eyesore and impacts on the birdlife negatively.

Cherry MacIldowie (Sandton, 2021-02-05)

I am living near by the park and this ilegale settlement compromise the security and beauti of the park

Majid Khan (Johannesburg, 2021-04-28)

Eugene Cloete (Sandton, 2021-05-19)

We as citizens have a right to protect our green spaces.

Terence Steeneveldt (Sandton, 2021-05-29)

It’s a health and safety risk. The people living there should be given access to decent government accommodation.

Lavash Chetty (Sandton, 2021-05-31)

I don't like the river to be poisoned because of all the wildlife such as fish and geese and ducks which are also poisoned. Plastic waste should not be burned as it contaminates the atmosphere and nature and is posionous. There is heavy smoke over the park at times from where the people live making it very unpleasant to walk at those times. I have heard gun shots from time to time. I would like to feel safe in the park. It is unfortunate as the squatters have never personally threatened me although I have often been in the park late or very early. They seem to mind their own business and come to the main area of the park to collect water in buckets from the municipal tap near the entrance to the park. Sometimes they play their radios loudly enough for thr noise to travel through the park which isn't nice. In principle I don't have any problem with squatters in the park but the lack of ablution facilities, burning of plastic and throwing waste into the river as well as the smoke and intermittent playing of radios does bother me. I was told they also wash cars sometimes of rich people using municipal water. I dont think that is right as rich people should not now abuse the situation and they should go to a proper car wash and not steal municipal water. If thr squatters could be accommodated reasonably and for example portable toilets put there and they do not burn plastic and leave toxic waste around and are obliged to follow park rules regarding playing radios like other park users then I don't have a problem with them living in the park at all. I go to the park to draw and I am thankful to have a place to go to where I feel I am safe and it is nice to share it with everyone. It's just unpleasant when there is smoke and noise from them or sounds like gunshots coming from that direction.

Maria Wilson (Johannesburg, 2021-06-12)

I do not want illegal squatters in a park where we walk our kids and dogs. It is not safe. They are polluting the water.

Nina Sieber (Sandton, 2022-01-21)

I am concerned for the safety and well-being of my fellow residents l.

Loren Taylor (Sandton, 2022-01-30)

Jeanne Dixon (Johannesburg , 2022-03-30)
