I'm signing because SICPP was the first place I experienced 20th century music in a robust and serious way. It opened my eyes to ways music could be made that I could never have imagined, and I now have a career performing contemporary music. Losing SICPP would mean losing a fixture of American contemporary music for students and professionals alike.

I believe passionately in the mission and the artistry of SICPP.

SICPP occupies a unique place in American musical life and will be an irredeemable loss to the Boston music scene. It must be preserved.

David Russell (Hyde Park, MA, 2021-11-06)

SICPP was an outstanding experience for me and I want to see other young composers benefit from this. The program is a vital part of the new music community and I hope to see it supported.

I benefited enormously from my time at SICPP, even in its virtual 2021 iteration. This is an essential festival!

I attended SICPP and it made a powerful, positive impact on my outlook on my career.

SICPP is an outstanding and unique program that provides invaluable experiences for young composers and performers. Please find a way to continue supporting this wonderful initiative.

SICPP was one of the best parts of living in Boston and attending NEC. I learned a ton from the performances and other activities. This is an incredible resource that needs to be continued for future generations.

This is an exceedingly important resource for the continuation of living, breathing, newly composed music. Our field, and the field of classical music in general, would be diminished by its loss.

I love SICPP!

Every music was new music when it was written. There is no future of music without new music. SICPP was the US version Darmstadt and Donaueschingen for me.

SICPP is a treasure, a vital part of the contemporary music community. It would be a tragedy to lose it.

I support my colleagues and our endeavor to preserve a place in society for experimental and contemporary classical music by it’s continued performance, study, and representation.

I have spent many joyful hours at this event. It is a treasure of contemporary music. There's certainly nothing like this in Boston, perhaps anywhere. it is a glorious celebration of living, breathing music. I got my MM at NEC in 1984, have been on the faculty of Berklee since 1989, and have am the director of the Jazz Composers Alliance, which I founded in 1985 with fellow NEC graduate Ken Schaphorst.

Darrell Katz (Waltham, 2021-11-07)

I am signing because this festival changed my life and my appreciation for the music of today. I have made lifelong connections with like minded fellows and wouldn’t have been able to do it anywhere else.

I have attended and benefitted from many SICPP events.

Job title: Professor of Artistic Research and Head of programme for keyboard, conducting and composition.

The dangers of continuous effects from right-leaning politics to reduce support of amd cut funds for artistic interaction is dangerous for the further development of social structures and human well-being worldwide. The ever increasing societal drive towards radicalism presents one of several worrying signs of a superficial society that yearns to be filled with artistic endeavours as a matter of life and death at this point.

Sicpp it’s an invaluable part of not only the Boston New Music community, but the international community as well. It is a treasured and prized institution it has long served as a home for contemporary thought and artistic endeavor in the world led by and participated by some of the great thinkers and creators in music. NEC, my alma mater, would be losing A treasured part of his heritage and offerings. Nec would be a fool to let a program of this magnitude dissolve and decay.

SICPP is a *gem* for contemporary music at New England Conservatory and the Boston music scene more generally. It would be a huge loss to NEC's reputation to devalue and withdraw support from this incredibly vibrant summer program. When I was an undergrad at NEC, this program's guests artists and students it attracted shaped me profoundly.

Katherine Balch (New York, 2021-11-07)

SICPP is one of the top festivals in the world for new music. As an NEC alumna, it was one of the most meaningful aspects of my NEC education.
It would be a huge oversight on the part of NEC to cut this program, which brings in thousands of top students and hundreds of stellar faculty from all over the world.

NEC has a real opportunity here to benefit from SICPP’s cutting-edge programming, diversity and inclusion initiatives, top faculty, and connections to the world’s most prominent and influential living composers. I am hoping President Kalyn and the NEC upper admin will make the right decision and support this amazing Festival.

SICPP is one of the most vibrant institutions I've ever experienced--year in and year out, it teems with music and ideas that are daring and challenging, rich and boundary-stretching.

SICPP was an incredible opportunity for me as a young composer and introduced me to both music and musicians that have been essential to my community and career.

I’m signing because SICPP offers a community building experience for the artists driving music forward. You wouldn’t have dreamed of telling Beethoven to stop writing or take away his opportunities. Why do that to the next crop of young composers and performers?

Nicole Parks (Arlington, 2021-11-08)

As an alum of NEC (MM '86) and someone who has benefited greatly from NEC's open and active environment to advance and nurture contemporary music performance skills and understanding, I am deeply concerned about the successful SICPP disappearing. This inclusive and supportive summer institute seems central in NEC's mission and in its core values: "... We believe that we have a responsibility to reinforce and expand the position of music in society by educating the next generation of music leaders, incubating new work, and sharing our sublime art with the widest possible audience." I urge you to reconsider and to explore ways to continue funding this program. Thank you.

I worked for NEC and with Steve Drury and SICPP for over ten years. This program is truly unique and needs to continue.

Melissa McCarthy Steinberg (Woodbury, 2021-11-09)

As a former guest artist/teacher at sicpp, I saw first hand the value of this important institute for the development of young musicians interested in modern music. Why would NEC fail to support something so successful that also has international recognition? Please reconsider!

As composer, performer, ensemble director and producer of new music events this event is essential in our field and one I highly recommend to all I work with in new music and university, conservatory, schools of music.

SICPP played a very important role in my life and my career. I wouldn’t have considered moving to Boston and forming a career here if it weren’t for SICPP. The institution has given me an amazing opportunity to meet and work with musicians in the area and to learn more about my craft. I would hate to see other musicians not given the opportunity that this institution has given me.

I have attended SICPP at NEC as a listener, and it is a dynamite series of concerts and workshops. Steve Drury brings together an amazing group of composers and musicians each year under a strong vision and unique ethos of music making. I have worked with Steve Drury and some of his SICPP musicians in the past while organizing concerts and they are flat-out selfless advocates of contemporary music. The quality of this festival equals the caliber of a leading conservatory like NEC, and that partnership should continue.

Rebecca Kim (NYC, 2021-11-12)

NEC has a long history of being a forward-thinking institution. The existence of the Contemporary Improvisation Program singlehandedly convinced me that I had a future in non-classical music when I was feeling unhopeful about my musical future. Steve Drury and SICPP are an incredibly important part of this forward-thinking legacy and have brought me musical joy on numerous occasions as a student.

Rafael Natan (Boston, 2021-11-12)

It is vital that progressive arts institutions remain in place to support the art people such as myself and many many others are pursuing.
