Stop the fires destroying World Heritage-listed K’gari (Fraser Island)
Dear Premier,
We of the Booral Community Association would like to express our concerns over the continuing destruction by bushfires on Fraser island (K’Gari) which lies before us in the Sandy Straits, Hervey Bay. Our beautiful WORLD HERITAGE-LISTED island is being destroyed for weeks as we hopelessly watch and there appears to be nothing done to stop this.
As of today (24th Nov 2020) 62100 hectares have been burnt on the island!
Sacred Aboriginal sites have been wiped out. Forests may never be rejuvenated again. Native flora and fauna extinguished. Brumbies, dingoes and other tourist attractions may well have all perished. The question is WHY?
Tourism is a major industry in our region, supplying jobs to many families. Why have Government resources not been deployed to stop this destruction? Can the Defence Force help?
The island has HUGE unique cultural, historical, zoological and national values so important to our country. There is hardly any media coverage. The smoke blowing over our community is posing a health risk to asthmatics. Please do something to save what is left to save and make this a priority.
