STREETLIGHT OUTAGE - Petition to COGTA Parliamentary Committee, Gauteng MEC for COGTA, Ekurhuleni MMC for Water & Energy, Mayor & City Mngr of Ekurhuleni & others

We, the residents of the LamDel Residents Association, the official registered Residents Association for the area, as well as the surrounding areas of Ward 35 and 39 in The City of Ekurhuleni;  and surrounding ares not named herein, hereby petition the COGTA Parliamentry CommitteeGauteng MEC for COGTA, Mr Lebogang Isaac Maile; the MMC for Water and Energy in the City of Ekurhuleni, Cllr Tiisetso Nketle; Mayor of City of Ekurhuleni, Mr. Mzwandile Collen Masina, City Manager for Ekurhuleni, Dr. Imogen Mashazi; as well as the EMM HOD for Electricity and the HOD of Finance in The City of Ekurhuleni.

We have ongoing problems with streetlights not being repaired for months and months on end.  The LamDel area is cast in complete darkness at night, which has resulted in a increase in crime in our area.

For months (even before COVID) we have had Street Lights without power which we have submitted to the COE via the official channels to escalate.  In November 2020, the LamDel Residents Association did a Street Light audit. This audit was submitted to the City Manager and City officials.  The audit has over 307 lines of information on it - that is not meaning only 307 streetlights are out, but each line can indicate up to 4 or 5 poles or more without power. No action was taken.

Since then there are even more streetlights not working, and currently the situation seems dire.

Our area is very dark. There has been a steep increase in crime in the area.
We have experienced a number of house robberies, and car hijackings because one can't see anything - and when the power is out (like we have on an ongoing basis) then you drive on a dark road and enter a dark house.

We are hence with calling on the above-mentioned officials to urgently intervene and resolve the ongoing street light outages and broken street lights and address the poor and lack of communication from the departments and lack of action on theses issues in our suburbs. We furthermore request a full situational report, corrective action plans and a maintenance report.

We can no longer be held hostage by the Departments and staff and the City of Ekurhuleni.

On behalf of the LamDel Residents Association
