We survived

To the Choctaw Peoples

A dheartháireacha is a dheirfiúracha, gabhaimíd míle buíochas libhse agus le bhúr muintir a chuaigh romhaibh as bhúr gcarthanacht.

We, the descendants of those who survived the Great Hunger in Ireland (1845-1852), wish to convey our sincere thanks to you the Choctaw people and to your ancestors for their thoughtfulness, generosity and kindness in assisting our people during the greatest disaster Ireland has known.  Your own people had experienced the anguish and suffering of the Trail of Tears just sixteen years previously and yet in spite of the trauma they must still have been dealing with they reached out the hand of brotherhood and support to our people.  Without this help many of us may not be alive today.  It is difficult to find words that adequately show our deep appreciation.

We survived!
