Valedictorian Eligibility-Los Molinos Unified School District

Currently in the student handbook it is stipulated that a student regardless of academic standings must have attended the high school by the first semester of their sophmore year, in order to be eligible to be honored for the Title of Valedictorian.

By signinging this petition you are agreeing that this rule should be changed, to where at the very least it reads - a student must be enrolled for at least one full academic school year to be eligible and considered for the Title of Valedictorian, depending on his or her academic standings, and weighted GPA.

Background info: we were notified of their existing rule in November of 2015. We brought to school boards attention where at the next meeting the added to their to discussion on Jan 21st 2016 for this meeting. We were told while no one liked the rules that was implemented ten years ago that they felt that they couldn't change it this far into the school year. Prior to their meeting I contact other Superintendents locally at schools to see what their policies were, and no other school locally had such a rule. I also contacted the California Board of education in Sacramemto, and they said too that it was a silly rule, but that it could easily be changed, I told our local board of our findings, but they still didn't want to change the rule. My son started this school in the second semester of his sophomore year, missing this rule cut off by five weeks. He is now in his senior year, getting ready to graduate in June, and has and has always held the number one spot of his class, with a GPA currently  of 4.16. All we are asking is that this rule changes so he is able to receive this title, and future students can also. I was told he will still be honored, just not get the title and that colleges wouldn't acknowledge the title, but his academic progress. This we have since found to not be true. Scholarships use the title, not GPA. We just want what is fair, and that he has earned his entire life, always maintaining this excellence. Thank you all!
