Response to DeskOps Management and the Events of 10/05

The purpose of this petition is to gather signatures in support of the collective concerns of DeskOps staff regarding the actions of upper management on 10/05/2022 during the campus shooting. Please read through the following statements and sign the petition if you agree with all of the statements listed below:

  1. I understand my responsibilities as a Desk Assistant/Desk Manager and acknowledge the expectations outlined in my contract.
  2. I understand that as desk staff I am considered "Essential Personnel" at the University and therefore have an important role on campus.
  3. I understand that DeskOps is an essential partner of Housing and Residential Life and that we are key to the operations of residence halls across campus.
  4. I recognize that we are responsible for the "general promotion of safety and security" within residence halls but DO NOT believe that my own personal safety and security should be compromised in any way by my role.
  5. I am aware of the fact that each desk is equipped with a "panic button" for use in the event of an emergent and unexpected situation that requires an escalated response, but I DO NOT believe that the use of panic buttons should be a safeguard against a known threat.
  6. I do not believe that upper management for Housing is equipped to "assess the safety and risk" of a dangerous emergency at the level of an active shooter/homicide, and believe that they should not make decisions that superceed law enforcement and University officials. 
  7. I do not believe that any responsibilities or expectations of my position are more important than my personal safety, emotional wellbeing, or life.
  8. I demand that DeskOps develops and active shooter protocol that actually addresses a campus-wide response and PRIORITIZES desk staff safety above all else. 
  9. I request that DeskOps upper management takes accountability for their response to the campus incident on 10/5 and reflects to recognize the impact that this response had on student staff actively going through a crisis.
