Petition: Save the Norwegian Institute at Athens!

The Norwegian Institute at Athens has for the past three decades been of great importance for the teaching, research, publishing, and dissemination of the culture, history, archaeology, and languages of the Eastern Mediterranean. Now, the Norwegian Institute is facing the danger of becoming terminally shut down, or critically underfunded, due to the severance of its financial support from two of the patron universities. In no uncertain terms, the future of the Norwegian Institute at Athens is in danger.  

The Norwegian Institute at Athens is one of 18 international schools for classical studies, archaeology, and cultural history in Greece, which are officially recognised by the Greek Ministry of Culture. This privilege forms the basis for a close Greek-Norwegian cooperation, and for an extensive European, and global, cultural exchange. The Institute at Athens gives Norwegian professionals a unique access to a network of international research institutes, cultural institutions, libraries, archives, and laboratories. Greece is not only important to the archaeological and classical research but has currently gained increasing importance for the study of crises in modern western societies. Researchers from all over the world, and from all disciplinary backgrounds, meet in Athens in order to work together and exchange ideas, with topics spanning from prehistoric times to the present day.

The Institute is accommodatingthe research needs for both students and researchers from the Norwegian universities, providing a solid connection for Norwegian researchers to the vast international and interdisciplinary research network in Athens. The Institute contributes to recruiting and educating younger researchers across disciplines and is Norway’s only academic institute in the Eastern Mediterranean. In this capacity, the Norwegian Institute at Athens is an indispensable resource to research and cultural exchange in this area.

The further operation of the Norwegian Institute at Athens should not solely depend on the support from the universities of Oslo and Bergen. Rather, we suggest a wider cooperation regarding the financing of the Norwegian Institute at Athens. The new financing model should reflect that the Institute’s activities and resources are open to both pupils, students, teachers, researchers, and other professionals, from the whole of Norway, and that the Institute is important for the cultural exchange between Norway and Greece. The Institute should be recognised as a national institution and become safeguarded with further funding. The prominence of this institute should become a priority interest and responsibility for several ministries, including the Ministry of Education and Research, the Ministry of Culture, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Ministry of Climate and Environment.

Opprop: Redd det norske institutt i Athen! 

Det norske institutt i Athen har i snart 30 år vært et viktig sted for undervisning, forskning, publisering og formidling av kultur, historie, arkeologi og språk forbundet med det østlige Middelhavsområdet. Instituttet står nå i fare for å bli nedlagt eller få et sterkt svekket økonomisk fundament fordi to av eieruniversitetene har sagt opp avtalen om eierskap og videre finansiering. Det råder stor usikkerhet rundt den videre driften av det norske institutt i Athen.

Det norske institutt i Athen er en av 18 internasjonale skoler for klassiske studier, arkeologi og kulturhistorie i Hellas som er anerkjent av det greske kulturdepartementet. Dette privilegiet danner grunnlag for et tett gresk-norsk samarbeid og for bred, europeisk og global kulturutveksling. Instituttet gir norske fagfolk en unik tilgang til et nettverk av internasjonale forskningsinstitutter, kulturinstitusjoner, biblioteker, arkiver og laboratorier. Hellas er ikke bare viktig for arkeologisk og antikkvitenskapelig forskning, men er i økende grad blitt viktig for å kunne studere kriser i moderne vestlige samfunn. Forskere fra hele verden, og fra alle fagfelt, møtes i Athen for å jobbe sammen og utveksle ideer, og arbeidet spenner over temaer fra vår forhistorie til vår egen samtid.

Instituttet tar imot både studenter og forskere ved norske universiteter og åpner dørene for dem i det omfattende, internasjonale, tverrfaglige forskningsmiljøet i Athen. Instituttet bidrar til rekruttering og utdanning av yngre forskere på tvers av fagområder, og er Norges eneste akademiske institutt i det østlige Middelhavet. Det norske institutt i Athen er en uunnværlig inngangsport til forskning og kulturutveksling i dette området.

Den videre driften av instituttet bør ikke utelukkende avhenge av støtte fra de to gjenværende eieruniversitetene Oslo og Bergen. Vi ønsker et bredere samarbeid om finansieringen av det norske institutt i Athen. Finansieringen bør avspeile at instituttets aktiviteter og ressurser er åpne for elever, studenter, lærere, forskere og andre fagfolk fra hele Norge, og at instituttet også er viktig for kulturutvekslingen mellom Norge og Hellas. Instituttet må bli anerkjent som en nasjonal institusjon, og sikres videre drift. Dette bør være et ansvar for flere departementer, både Kunnskapsdepartementet, Kulturdepartementet, Utenriksdepartementet og Klima- og miljødepartementet.
