Long Island Seeks Change to a broken Healthcare System

In regards to the accident that claimed 3 young men on Long Island. The next generation of fishermen here. Trying to stay here and keep this place going.

The lack of emergency care is very concerning. I saw they are putting an ambulance in the mailboat this week. A week late. But the bigger question is, what will it matter? There is no facility to undertake an emergency situation. No medical equipment. Not enough doctors or nurses.

This tragedy could have saved one life if there was a system in place. There is none.

I am hoping you can spend time on this to help out the people of Long Island. They feel pretty abandoned, especially in times like this!

I have been living here for 4 years and plan on raising my son here, but with events like this, it makes me question why I would live somewhere that doesn’t have adequate medical.

This really needs to be addressed now. Should not have taken a tragic accident for this to occur. How many more?

You owe it to Manoli Constantakis and his family to do better. And for all Long Islanders.

Please help this island be the best it can be.

Sincerely,

Melissa Balter-Constantakis

I’m signing because every life matter! As a Long Islander it aches my heart to see that we have moved backward in health care for the family islands.

I believe there is much to be done to better the health system. We are here asking for your help to provide for ourselves, not the government. What we need of them, are the resources, time, and training. What we ask are reasonable and are of basic necessities.

We have been put on the back burner and neglected for far too long. It's heart breaking that our family had to lose three family members, for this to take place. But stops here and now before anything else tragic like this happens again, and someone else has to lose a love one because of total negligence and lack of medical supplies or equipment. WE THE FAMILIES OF LONG ISLAND HAVE HAD ENOUGH, THIS HAS TO END NOW AND WE SEE SOME TYPE OF CHANGE.

I’m signing because it’s deplorable and infuriating that Manoli lost his life due to the incompetence, and lackadaisical effort of our medical personnel.

The issue of an nonfunctional morgue and untimely emergency flight has always been an issue on the island since before I was born how is it that time after time people are dying and there is no change it is about time something changes

In 1999 we lost our brother in a traffic accident and doctors told us he could have lived had he received proper medical attention faster

We shouldn’t have to beg for basic and affordable healthcare, or capable, tentative, adequate and compassionate healthcare workers. It is 2022 and this is essentially criminal negligence!

Cordell Wells (Long Island , 2022-01-25)

I’m signing because for too long out islanders have to go out of their way for healthcare when there are more than enough land mass in the Bahamas to ensure there’s more public facilities within arms reach and physicians who are trained in Family Medicine to be deployed to them.

Long Islanders are hardworking people that continuously contribute to the well being of this country on a regional platform but are always left behind when the benefits are being dispersed. When provided with the access to basic necessities like water in the 21st century, the tax-funded government anticipates praise. The economy is slowly dying there and the Long Island people have to fight for it alone because the authorities do not care. It is a toxic relationship, the government drains the resources of LI people and give nothing in return. There are young and older people alike who want to move home with their families but understand the risk involved moving to an island with 1 doctor servicing 4000 people. No access to any sort of health care. The nurses are overworked. The uncertified staff are consistently filling the gaps and not being compensated for it. People make flashy gestures like donating an ambulance without takibg a second thought about how it will be staffed and stocked with supplies. The clinic itself does not have the bare necessities. If you require medication outside of the same drugs you get OTC, you have to make arrangements for individuals in Nassau to purchase on your behalf. With everything we have been forced to do for ourselves. Lives in the past have been saved by intervention of locals coming together and doing what is necessary to get patients to the closest hospital to us (a 1 hr minimum plane ride away) but not we have been denied even that. Facilities are not accessible to us and in bridging the gap the government decides to burn the bridge. I am under the impression that it is because they are not profiting from that venture. Emergency policy/protocol is developed and mandated with a blanketed approach without considering the unique dynamics of the Family Islands. The government has a Nassau-centric mindset, to hell with the rest of the Bahamas because they are likely trying to sell us off in any event. Three smart, well mannered, hardworking, vibrant young men have lost their lives to this battle that we will most likely continue to face for generations to come if we do not stand up and demand change. My signature reflects my stand.

I have a 17 year old who needs medical air services at least 2 or 4 times a year and the wait is outstandingly ridiculous.. Pins and needles knowing her life depends on whether or not the services are on time and proficient..Stand up my Long Islanders we deserve a whole lot better!‼️ 4 and 5 hours later is just to Long.. An hour or even 2 but not 5 or 6 man come on 🙏🙏

Time is precious in emergency situations. Waiting HOURS for an emergency flight is unacceptable!!!! Most recently, sweet boy Manoli Constantakis lost his life due to poor emergency care and lack of time management on Friday. THIS HAS TO BE RECTIFIED! We cannot keep losing our beloved family back home because of lack of efficient planning and medical supplies!

Nadia Lowe (Freeport , 2022-01-25)

Our health care system can really be better on the island . More medication, more health workers, more hours for our clinic to be open , more equipment as in x-ray machines and more ways to transport sick individuals to the clinic . Also a blood bank should be available and an earlier turn around for emergency flights !

Manoli was my cousin and his death saddens me deeply. As a physician myself, I know the correlation between time-to-treat and survival rates.
I feel that the basic requirements of medical care were not met. The health system failed my cousin.
Please fix it! The people of Long Island deserve better.
RIP

The death of Manoli Constantakis may have been prevented had he been efficiently transported. No one should have to go through what this family is going through. This needs to be fixed now!!!

Long island was my home for 5 years! I grew up there! I knew these kids! I went to school with them and saw them in primary school uniforms! My mother was the only doctor on long Island MULTIPLE times, and it was exhausting. ALL people need adequate care regardless of the location. I want my island to receive better because they deserve better. It's called a "family island" because everyone knows everyone and it's like a family. I had the privilege to grow up on long Island, and it is an experience that I would not trade for anything. We gotta do better, not only for manoli, trevy and Mandie, but for ALL Bahamian on family islands!

It Is a real issue and a traumatic experience for many people who live in a place with insufficient medical personnel and vehicles. Personally, I knew the three people in that passed in the car crash and two of them were my classmates. It would be real burden be lifted if this petition is successful in sparking a this much needed change.
