Upgrade Ward 28

Councillor Mary Goby has received continous complaints from residents about raw sewerage overflowing from manholes in Ward 28 which in turn flows into the streets and surrouding properties.

The overflow results in:

  • Serious health risks - residents are at risk of contracting infections when coming in contact with this water;
  • Ecological damage - there is a reserve behind the affected properties which is at risk of premature degeneration of flora and fauna in the area; and
  • Property damage - the constant overflow has also caused damage to the affected properties, resulting in a decline in property value.

The DA’s petition calls on the Ekurhuleni Metro to do the following:

  • Budget - a budget must be allocated to fix this problem immediately; and
  • Upgrade - the current sewerage infrastructure needs to upgraded as sewerage piping has a maximum lifespan of 60 years, but some of these pipes were installed more than 80 years ago.
