Save The Wilkes University Band Program

I have been a part of the marching arts for 12 seasons and it all started with high school marching band. High school marching band gave me an opportunity to be a part of something bigger than myself. It taught me how to work as a team and how my team depends on my own work both in and outside of practice. It gave me confidence, taught me discipline, and how to be self motivated.
Marching band turned me into the person I am today and I would not be where I am without it.

I do not attend Wilkes personally, but I am a member of my own university's band program. I know how integral a part of band is in my own and many others lives. While the reason why the band program will be cut is not public, if it is due to budget cuts I know the school opted to renovate their sports center that many students said worked fine. I hope that the school can take a look at their spending habits and find a way to keep this band program.

I’m signing because the opportunity to participate in music more often about the participation than it is the music for many non-music majors.

The impact of marching band on a collegiate community is beyond comprehensible.

I studied music at Wilkes even though it was not my major. I believe that performance arts are particularly valuable for well rounded graduates who hope to lead a productive professional and personal life.

The arts are essential to growth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Taking away a young adult’s creative outlet is wrong in so many ways. Marching band is a home to so many, and a vital part in many people’s college experiences. It is an art, and it should not be taken away from students and the college community.

Cassandra Kull (Franklin, 2020-05-13)

I was a college marching band member and I know how important it is not only to the members but also to their fellow students and fans!

I'm signing because band was an important part of my youth, introduced me to lifelong friends, and I still have very fond memories of my time in band!

Katherine Mills (Orefield, 2020-05-13)

Band has given not only me, but so many other people an outlet to be themselves. Music is important and saves lives. Taking away the band program would be like taking away water or oxygen. I know band may seem like a silly little thing, but I promise you band kids love their band family like no either and it would be unfair to take that away from them.

Georgia Witt (Bettendorf, 2020-05-13)

I am a lover of music and I was in the band from.grade school through high school and made me a better person. I developed a greater love for music.

I am signing because I was in band for 9 years throughout elementary and high school, and some of the best moments of my life are tied to those days. I am signing because my daughter started the same journey 3 years ago and sees herself continuing through college. Finally, I am signing because, in these trying times of COVID 19, it is the artists (musicians included) that are working to keep us sane and connected.

Everyone everywhere should have access to self expression via music. It’s not a choice that should be able to be made to cut something so important to the community on and off campus.

Stephanie Cohen (Dunmore, 2020-05-13)

I was in the band for two years during my pre-pharmacy course and it was a wonderful way to express my artistic side. The arts are more important than ever right now!

I am a flute student... music has saved my life, as well as so many others. Band is a family like no other. No matter how bad your day may be, band brings us together and always, at least, gets a laugh out of us. Cutting this program would be a horrible things for many of the students who enjoy band or rely on band keeping them alive.

Anya Kranyak (Drums, 2020-05-13)

Music is important for those who are passionate about the subject. It is equivalent to an athlete loving their sport.

Michael Parmelee (Shavertown , 2020-05-13)

As a band student I know that band has helped me find a place where I belong and has helped me figure out what I want to do with my life (I am going to college to be a music therapist). If you get rid of the band program you are getting rid of a place that people like me feel safe and a place for people to destress themselves. Don’t get rid of the band program.

Arianna Bailey (Wilmington , 2020-05-13)

As a retired Music Educator I recognize the value and importance of a band program to the school, community, and participating members. I hope you do also.

Michael Ryan (Pottsville, 2020-05-13)

The band program draws students to Wilkes who are interested in other majors but want to continue participating in band. I have had many conversations with students who chose Wilkes over other options because they could continue to be part of a marching band. It’s also a great supporter of school spirit at sports and other events. It would be a loss to the whole campus to lose the band program, and it would hurt recruitment.

Helen Davis (Mountain Top, 2020-05-13)

I'm signing this because I care about every band program and I would hate to see the beauty of music die off!

Lauren Slaugenhaupt (Knox, 2020-05-13)

I'm signing because as an art student, it is vital and necessary to keep art programs alive everywhere. Wilkes University deserves a marching band program as much as any other school!!

My kids were in band for years. It's a very enriching experience. They learn so much. They've continued to pursue music activities into college. It's shameful to consider band or any music program to be disposable. Find another way to cut spending.

I'm signing because the arts make people better citizens. The Wilkes Band and Music Program demand high standards. People carry this experience with them into their careers, within or outside of the creative arts. Wilkes has always been about the well-rounded student. Don't abandon that value now.

Stephen Benson (Melbourne, 2020-05-13)

The Wilkes marching band program is an incredible, growing group of students. They deserve the opportunity to continue their work in cultivating a proud tradition of excellence for future students.

WTF Wilkes?? Stop overpaying the fcking president & administration and use that $ to fund arts. This school is such a joke in so many ways

ruth castro (mahwah, 2020-05-13)

#887

Music is a very important outlook for students and provides a community for those that enjoy it and want to keep performing. Taking that away will not only lower enrollment but be a massive detriment to those that are already committed to Wilkes and can no longer express themselves through the most expressive activity there is.

Robert Wiedemer (Denver, 2020-05-13)

I'm signing because my daughter is a member of the marching band. She has been in marching band since a Freshman in high school. She has made life long friends through Wilkes marching band. This is her outlet during the tough semesters for her.

Pam Wintersteen (Dallas, 2020-05-13)

Music is extremely important and shouldn't be taken away from these kids. All of their hard work to get to where they are. Their talent and passion should not go to waste.

Tara Haughney (Wilkes Barre, 2020-05-13)

#897

Band has always been a huge part of my life and the lives of others. It would horrible to remove an outlet like this. People make all sorts of friendships and other relationships through band and removing it would put strain on people. Also, some people use band as an outlet for the stress they deal with so removing it could build stress in some students because they would be lacking their normal way of releasing it. I believe band is an important part of this school and it would be horrible if it was taken away.

I’m signing because I’m a musician and multi instrumentalist at Berklee, and I understand what it’s like for marching band members to feel like they lost one of the most important things in their life. Please save the music program regardless.

Marching band was a HUGE factor in why I chose the college I chose. I have said it before and I will say it again and again- joining the marching band in college was the best decision I could have made. I can’t count how many friendships and memories I have made SOLELY because of marching band.

I was a part of the music program as a high school student in the 1990s. My daughter is currently a part of the dance program. She has friends who are a part of the current music program. Don't be another school that casts music aside. You're better than that. Open your eyes to what it has to offer, and do not strip your students of the opportunity make their lives more fulfilling with music. Many of the students currently enrolled at Wilkes chose that school because music was available to them. Please reconsider.

I used to play Clarinet in School and it was such a Fun, Great, Art to learn different music and support your Schools and see the smiling faces when you marched in the parades! So sad to see this be taken away from our students ❤️

I marched at Ohio State University and was a member of the Eta chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi, a national honorary band service fraternity. For five seasons, the marching band was my family, and I'm forever grateful for the incredible opportunities it offered me. College bands are amazing representatives of their universities, provide essential elements to any athletic experience, and are straight-up historically important in American culture.
To cut the program is a huge mistake that will negatively impact your entire university, but would most directly ruin the overall college experience for the student musicians themselves.
You have a devoted, passionate group of student musicians representing all sorts of majors and degrees, and who want nothing more than to use their talents to represent the school they love and call home.
Please reconsider this cut.
Thank you.
