I totally support respiratory therapists helping with COPD eductaion as they are the key to correct use of inhalers for the patients.

I regularly see a pulmonary doctor and have benefited from respiratory therapy. A therapist can be hands on in ways that my doctor cannot. I would not give up either. Allowing for reimbursement for respiratory services makes economic sense and will result in better patient care.

Respiratory Therapists play a valuable role in not only caring for and monitoring COPD patients, but also in motivating and empowering patients to take control of their COPD through education and self management skills. So many COPD patients do not receive adequate instruction or follow up in how to use their inhalers, for example, and end up back in the hospital as a result  with even more damage to their already damaged lungs. They NEED RT services as they are the experts.

Respiratory Therapists play a vital role in patient education. Compliance would certainly improve and less hospital stays would take place if therapists were able to provide knowledge to their patients.
