It is unfair to get out of district contractors in to replace Comet who have done a fabulous job for many years. Money isn’t everything. Keep it local, support our local community and whanau.

We need to support local clubs to sustain them into the future. Learning to swim is a priority to build confidence & resilience in everyone. And to help prevent drownings.

#1042

Supporting the back bone of Gisborne’s swimming industry. What a kick in the teeth after decades of service. As a local business owner who relies on local supporting local I am feeling for Comet hugely - this decision is appalling.

Tessa Beattie (Gisborne , 2023-06-04)

#1043

GDC should be supporting local groups to be supplying goods and services to Gisborne. An experienced and local supplier Comet would give you better outcomes.

Offering over the Learn to Swim programme to an International company on the basis that they offer Te Reo Lessons & some free lessons whilst overlooking a local, longstanding club is not the right way. GDC, you got it so so wrong & I am appalled.

Alice Volante (Gisborne, 2023-06-04)

Nick Whiting (Gisborne , 2023-06-04)

#1063

Support local, keep it local

Leonie Brown (Gisborne, 2023-06-04)

#1065

When Gisborne District Council chooses an International Company where all profits go abroad, over a Club that has been doing an excellent job teaching our community how to swim and survive in Tairāwhiti for over 65yrs to run their Learn to Swim Programme at the new Kiwa Pools. Do they serve our community? Are they making the best choices for their people? Do they not have a procurement policy that supports local businesses? Why stay living in Gisborne when even the local Council doesn't support local?"

Amanda White (Gisborne, 2023-06-04)

#1071

Support local - Council could have negotiated with Comet to keep our community engaged and active. How do we survive as a community if local organisations are not supported by local council. So disappointed.

Dianah Foley (Gisborne, 2023-06-04)

#1072

Comet is iconic... my kids all had comet lessons at the Olympic pools...
Now gdc gives the contract to out of towners?
Stink GDC

#1075

Comet teach life water skills & have an family friendly atmosphere with locals & new comers, I am so disappointed in the GDC for not allowing Comets contract to follow through to KIWA!!

Phoenix Ngarimy (Gisborne, 2023-06-04)

#1076

I strongly and wholeheartedly support Comets Swimming Club to have first right of choice to the Swimming lessons Contract at the new Kiwa pools. Their rich history and lengthy years of community service to teach our children n our whanau members to swim, to survive in water, some to elite standards of national and international attainment and topclass recognition speaks volumes.
To give this contract to an overseas provider, is killing local community industry, local community dedication, spirit, guts and loyalty and demeaning and derogatory to our local community, and our own gutsy, Gizzy expertise, skillset, and triedntrue experienced people; a huge kick in the guts for Gisborne's own people.
We've had it hard these past few years, so to give the Contract to Comets is not only commonsense, it will bring employment, it will put money into the pockets of our own plus bring an uplifting and a united sense of joy, and pride, honouring our own experts, our own people. Gisborne District Council, do the right thing! ✅️

Rakairoa Maraki (Gisborne, 2023-06-04)

I want to learn after 56 years how to swim. I love my Maori culture, am still learning Te Reo, and back our community's Comets Swimming Club 100%. Don't come over here and teach our people OUR OWN LANGUAGE! No siree!

#1084

Krisynthia Tangaere (Gisborne, 2023-06-04)

#1086

We need to support local first and foremost. Comet has done (and is doing) an excellent job teaching our children to swim. Comet taught me to swim. My two sons learnt to swim with Comet too and now my granddaughter has started lessons from the age of 6 months. All of that means something, right???? Comet has been committed to this community for 65 years, why give all of that away to an international company? What are their values? Will they be as loyal? What did you base your decision on GDC?
I’m very disappointed in this decision and stand strongly in my support of Comet. Do the right thing for Tairawhiti GDC, we challenge you!!!

Tino Rangatiratanga!

DONNA MOSES-HEENEY (GISBORNE, 2023-06-04)

#1089

Comet is a long standing local sports group. For our council who is made up of locally elected members to turn around and put the boot in by outsourcing learn to swim is utterly disgraceful! Comet has done so much for the community and has shaped so many kids lives in Gisborne with the basics of water skills. If we don’t voice our concerns we won’t know what will happen next to other community groups.

Andrew Rosso (Gisborne, 2023-06-04)

#1090

GDC should be ensuring that contracts remain local. Hugely disappointed in GDC’s decision to support non-local contracts at the cost of local.

Karen Albert (Gisborne, 2023-06-04)

#1091

Comet did an excellent job teaching me to swim and are an integral part of the Gisborne learn to swim community. It would be heart wrenching to lose this for Comet.

#1100

Jennie Falloon (Gisborne, 2023-06-04)

#1101

I pay way too much on rates to put up with poor decision making such as this. I might ignore the disparities between town and coast council support and services, but I say no this - Comet has supported coast whanau more than the council!

Mero Irihapeti (Tokomaru Bay, 2023-06-04)

#1105

Comet is a fantastic swim training organisation and run very professionally with a great team of coaches. My kids both are learning to swim with Comet and have so for the past 3 years. Swimming with comet is the highlight of their week. Gisborne is a small rural town and supporting local businesses where we can is important for our region

Hayley Anderson (Gisborne , 2023-06-04)

#1106

I'm supporting thus petition because, pure and simple, Comets Club are local. They have been around for nany years. Why go outside the area? I'm guessing it's more money to pay for the complex. Thought that the financial plan was sorted but I'm also guessing it's not.

Caroline Puketapu (Gisborne, 2023-06-04)

#1107

Look after our own,but not in this situation GDC dishes it out to an unknown...prob got the council eating in their pockets or vice versa.....🤬😡😡😱

AOMIHI TURAHIRI COOK (Te Araroa, 2023-06-04)

Ngahuia Taukamo (Gisborne , 2023-06-04)

#1116

I am signing this petition because my four children who are now in there 40’s and 50’s all belonged to the Comet Swimming Club under Beth Meade and benefited greatly from belonging to that club and i think it is disgraceful that the contract has been given to another source and a overseas one at that … where is the loyalty to the locals and the GCC needs to take a long hard look at themselves…

Robin McNeil (Gisborne, 2023-06-04)

#1117

I’m signing because I grew up in gisborne. Comet taught so many to swim from home. Keep it local and support local businesses.

I’m signing because I love Comet. I grew up as a comet swimmer, and there was nothing but sadness that overcame me when I found out Comet didn’t get a contract with the new pools. SO UNFAIR.

This should of been an open consult with community input .

Rangi Houia (Gisborne , 2023-06-04)

#1126

If there is any way I can support a wonderful club doing such amazing work for our community.. I will. Give transparency, review the weighting process, reverse the decision, .. it seems inconceivable that local (and such a proven quality local!) wouldn’t win out in a thorough review by a council that has “support local” on its banner?

Friedlinde Weiberle (Gisborne, 2023-06-04)

Council are not communicating with the people of Tairawhiti! Repairing and putting in place things that don't support our city or it's people. They are hypocrites, Pharisees, say one thing and do another. Why do council brake things that ain't broken?? Give comet back the contract. The people have spoken.

Leza Ripia (Turanganui a kiwa, 2023-06-04)

#1146

It's a slap in the face to the local community to send the learn to swim program overseas. The pools are already overpriced and another example of the dollar overriding the councils sense.

Karen Wells (Gisborne , 2023-06-04)

#1188

Comet is a locally run business for our community. They are and always have been focused on the better good for our community. It is so sad to see that an overseas company has taken priority of a club that has been successfully run over 60 odd years of service. There will be no loyalty to our community with this overseas company. Big, cheaper companies do not mean better.
Keep it local for locals

Nicky Atwood (Gisborne, 2023-06-04)
