An appeal to the political leaders of the Christian Assyrian/Syriac community in Syria

History of mankind is repeating itself. Again the Middle East has become the centre of power struggle where mighty countries determine the balance of power in the world. The wind of change exposing  herself in the Arabic spring rose in Tunisia and was supposed to blow away all the dictators in  the Middle East and free the people from suppression. In some countries like Tunisia and Egypt  the revolution evolved relatively successful. The same hope emerged in Syria and the Assyrian  Democratic Organization (ADO) was even one of the six organizations who lay down the  foundation of the current Syrian Opposition in the ‘Declaration of Damascus’ in 2005.

However it is now time to evaluate the course of the Syrian Revolution which started in March 2011 and to search on the basis of the current reality for solutions which will bring Syria freedom, democracy and a patch for economic development in the near future. In Syria the wind of the Revolution changed into a hurricane, devastated the country and plunged it into a civil war. More than hundred thousand Syrians died since the start of the Revolution, millions flee the country and the pillars of the economy are destroyed.

The Revolution started as a struggle for more freedom and democracy, but unfortunately it has become an opportunity for radical Islamism to extend their influence in Syrian society. The armed  fundamentalist Islamic groups hijacked the Revolution and put aside modern liberal Syrian  activists. The Syrian Christians were the first ones who suffered from this change. The kidnapping of the two bishops of the Syriac-Orthodox church and the Greek- Orthodox church in Aleppo illustrates this.

A second very worrying development is the deadlock the military fighting on the ground has  landed. Neither the Syrian Army nor the Free Syrian Army has been able to end the fighting and to claim victory. The arming by foreign powers of both sides will only prolong and intensify the conflict with many casualties. A military solution seems not to be the answer. Considering the above mentioned changes in the Syrian conflict we appeal to the Assyrian Democratic  Organization  (ADO) and  other  Assyrian/Syriac  activists  to  reconsider  their political strategy and to start realizing the next demands:

1. Searching  for  a  national  political  solution  where  both  the  Syrian  regime  and  the  Syrian Opposition take part in it without any preconditions.

2.  Until there is no political solution for the Syrian conflict there has to build an Assyrian/Syriac army  unit  in the Al-Jazire region which is defensive but protects and controls the Assyrian regions and people.

3. To  appeal  for  the  international  humanitarian  organizations  that  humanitarian  aid  also reaches  the Christians in Syria. A humanitarian disaster is evolving for the Christians. The international aid does not reach the Christians because they are not in the known refugee camps.  The  Christians  flee  to  their  own  monasteries  in  the  surrounding  countries  or disappear without leaving any trace. Aid should reach them through churches in the region or through local organizations as the Syrian Christian Relief Organization (SCRO).

4. To  appeal  to  the  International  Community  to  be  invited  and  to  take  part  in  the  next international   Conference   of   Geneva   as   an   official   delegation   of   the   Assyrian/Syriac community.

Oproep aan de politieke leiders van de christelijke Assyrische/Suryoye gemeenschap in Syrië

Het Midden-Oosten is zoals al vaker in de wereldgeschiedenis weer een arena geworden waar de machtsverhoudingen in de wereld worden uitgevochten en bepaald. De wind van de Arabische Lente kwam in Tunesië op en zou het gehele Midden-Oosten van dictaturen en onderdrukking verlossen. In sommige landen als Tunesië en Egypte verliep de revolutie relatief voorspoedig. In Syrië had men ook dezelfde hoop en was de Assyrische Democratische Organisatie zelfs een van de zes groepen die de basis vormden voor de huidige Syrische Oppositie namelijk ‘de Verklaring van Damascus’ in 2005.

Echter het is nu tijd om de ontwikkelingen sinds de start van de revolutie in maart 2011 te evalueren en aan de hand van de huidige realiteit te zoeken naar oplossingen die Syrië in de toekomst vrijheid, democratie en een pad tot economische vooruitgang bieden. in Syrië heeft de wind van de revolutie meer een storm teweeggebracht die het land in een burgeroorlog heeft gedompeld. Meer dan honderdduizend Syriërs zijn overleden, miljoenen zijn Syrië ontvlucht en de pilaren van de economie zijn vernietigd.

De revolutie begon als een strijd voor meer vrijheid en democratie, maar heeft zich jammer genoeg geëvolueerd tot een kans voor fundamentalistische Islamieten om hun invloed in Syrië te vergroten. De militaire Islamitische bewegingen hebben de revolutie gegijzeld en verlichte denkers opzijgeschoven. De christenen in Syrië hebben dit meteen ondervonden. De nog steeds ontvoerde bisschoppen van de Syrisch-Orthodoxe kerk en van de Grieks-orthodoxe kerk uit Aleppo zijn hier een voorbeeld van.

Een tweede zeer zorgwekkende ontwikkeling is de impasse waarin de militaire strijd in is beland. Zowel de Syrische leger als de Vrije Syrische Leger zijn niet in staat gebleken het conflict militair tot een einde te brengen. Met de verdere bewapening van beide kampen door buitenlandse machten zal het conflict alleen maar langer duren en bloediger worden. Een militaire oplossing lijkt gedoemd te mislukken.

Gezien de veranderende Syrische situatie doen wij een oproep aan de Assyrische Democratische Organisatie en andere Assyrische/Suryoye politieke activisten zich voor de volgende punten in te zetten:

1. In de politieke nationale proces zoeken naar een politieke oplossing waaraan zowel het Syrische regime als de oppositiebewegingen aan deelnemen, onder geen enkele vooropgestelde voorwaarden.
2. Tot er een politieke oplossing voor Syrië komt een Assyrische/Suryoye militaire eenheid in Al-Jazire regio oprichten, die defensief van aard is en de Assyrische/Suryoye regio’s en bevolking beschermt.
3. Bij de internationale hulporganisaties erop aandringen dat hun hulp ook de christenen bereikt. Er voltrekt zich een humanitaire ramp voor christenen in Syrië. De beschikbare internationale hulp bereikt de Syrische christenen niet omdat ze niet in de bekende vluchtelingenkampen zitten. Zij vluchten naar kloosters of verdwijnen in de illegaliteit. Via kerken of lokale organisaties als de Syrian Christian Relief Organization in Syrië moeten Christenen worden bereikt.
4. Bij de Internationale Gemeenschap erop aandringen dat een delegatie van de Assyrische gemeenschap wordt uitgenodigd en deelneemt aan de tweede Conferentie in Geneve die mogelijk in juli wordt georganiseerd.

نداء إلى المسؤولين السياسيين للشعب السرياني الآشوري

هبت رياح الربيع العربي بداية من تونس عبر مصر و اليمن و ليبيا لتحرر شعوب الشرق الأوسط من حكم الدكتاتوريات و ظلمهم لشعوبهم. بعض الثورات مرت بشكل سلمي و سلس كما هو واضح في الشكل في بعض الدول مثل تونس و مصر. أما في سوريا كانت التوقعات والتمنيات أن تلقى الثورة السورية نفس المصير في تلك الدول ولكن؟

الآن وحسب التطورات التي واكبت الثورة السورية وما آلت اليه منذ بداياتها في آذار ٢٠١١ حان الوقت لتقييم الوضع من قبل المنظمات والأحزاب السريانية الآشورية وفي مقدمتهم المنظمة الاثورية الديمقراطية التي كانت جزءا أساسيا من المعارضة السلمية في بدايتها عام ٢٠٠٥ من خلال تأسيس إعلان دمشق المطالب للحرية و العدالة و الإصلاح بطرق ديمقراطية و سلمية.

حيث إن الوضع الراهن يتطلب إعادة دراسة للتطورات التي تمر بها الثورة السورية و البحث عن بدائل و حلول لمستقبل سوريا في الحرية و الديمقراطيّة و التطور الاقتصادي. الثورة التي بدأت من اجل أهداف نبيلة تحولت إلى ثورة غير منضبطة وخلقت أجواء غير مناسبة جرت البلاد إلى حرب أهلية راح ضحيتها أكثر من ١٠٠٠٠٠ سوري نتيجة للاقتتال الداخلي و ملايين السوريين هجروا في الداخل والخارج ودمرت أساسات الاقتصاد الداخلي و باتت سورية ساحة للتطرف الإسلامي ولنشر الفكر المتطرف، حيث الحركات الإسلامية المسلحة خطفت الثورة السورية و همشت الثوار الحقيقيين المطالبين للحرية والعدالة و المساواة و إصلاح بنية الدولة.

أما الآن و بعد كل ما حدث و يحدث يعيش المسيحيين السوريين هذا الواقع المؤسف و المؤلم الذي لا يطاق وهم الحلقة الأضعف في مكونات الدولة السورية، حيث اختطاف المطرانين يوحنا إبراهيم و بولص يازجي مطراني مدينة حلب و مصيرهم المجهول حتى تاريخه يجسد هذا الواقع المؤلم.

ما يزيد الأمر تعقيداً و الماً ما وصلت اليه الأطراف المتحاربة، الدولة و جيشها النظامي من طرف والجيش السوري الحر و التنظيمات الإسلامية المسلحة من طرف آخر حيث لا يستطيع احد الأطراف الحسم عسكرياً بل يزيد من تدمير مقدرات الدولة السورية. إلى جانب ذلك تسليح الأطراف المتحاربة في سوريا عن طريق القوى الإقليمية والدولية جعل الوضع في سوريا أكثر دموياً و يطيل من أمد الحرب الأهلية، حيث أن الحل العسكري في سوريا لن يكون في صالح أي من الأطراف ولا في صالح الدولة السورية كدولة.

الآن و حسب التحولات و التطورات في الأزمة السورية نطالب المنظمة الاثورية الديمقراطية و القوى السريانية الآشورية الأخرى أن يعملوا مشتركين لإنجاح الأمور التالية:

١- البحث عن حل سياسي وطني يشترك فيه النظام و أحزاب المعارضة بدون أي شروط مسبقة.

٢- الضغط على المجتمع الدولي لتامين تمثيل الشعب السرياني الآشوري ضمن وفد مستقل للمشاركة في مؤتمر جينيف ٢ المزمع عقده قريباً.

٣- حتى نضوج الحل السياسي العمل على تأسيس قوة عسكرية سريانية آشورية في منطقة الجزيرة السورية ذو طابع دفاعي لحماية المناطق السريانية الآشورية.

٤- الطلب من المنظمات الإغاثية إيصال المساعدات الإنسانية للمسيحيين السوريين في الداخل السوري واللاجئين المسيحيين في الأديرة و الكنائس في تركيا وذلك عن طريق الكنائس و المؤسسات الخيرية كمنظمة الإغاثة المسيحية السورية.
