Calitzdorp Water Fiasco    

All inhabitants of Kannaland, and in particular for this Petition, Calitzdorp, have the Basic Human Right, according to Chapter 2 of the South African Constitution, to have access to clean and safe water which is fit for human consumption and use: Refer to Information leaflet of the Human Rights Commission attached.   Government has the obligation, as per the South African Constitution, to provide water. If the Local Government is unable to do so, District, Provincial or National Government, must step in and ensure that all citizens have access to safe and clean water fit for human consumption!   Calitzdorp and the Gamka Rural Water Scheme has been suffering for months due to patent incompetence by the Kannaland Municipality. Excuses from Snr Municipal Officials, include “oops the key was left in the bakkie that went to Oudtshoorn”, “oops we don’t know why”, etc.   A completely reasonable expectation from all residents of Kannaland is that Snr Management should, by virtue of their designated scope of work, take action, by getting up from the proverbial desk and into the field to attend to the problems.   At this stage the untreated water in the Gamka dam is safer for human and animal consumption than the water in the taps…. This is unacceptable.  

We demand, constitutionally, the services that we pay for, and insist on action being taken by the relevant parties to attend to the crises.   We deserve access to safe and clean water for human consumption and for our animals!   We demand that capable and experienced personnel be appointed, to ensure that services are delivered at the basic level as per the South African Constitution!  

As organizers of this petition, we will submit a full report to the Human Rights Commission (HRC), Garden Route District Municipality, The Western Cape Government, as well as the National Department of COGTA.  

We call on the community of Calitzdorp, across all groups, political divides, rural and urban, to please sign this petition!  

We need 1000 signatures to give this the power it needs to reach the highest levels of government to ensure that Calitzdorp receives the services that we pay for and have a basic human right to!
