City of Ekurhuleni Waste Crisis

We the residents of the City of Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality are being subjected to an unprecedented Waste Crisis in the history of the City.

We petition the following persons directly:

  • Mayor Cllr Mzwandile Masina,
  • The MMC of Environmental Resource- and Waste Management Alderman Khosi Mabaso,
  • The City Manager Dr Imogen Mashazi,
  • The MEC of Economic Development, Environment, Agriculture & Rural Development in Gauteng Mr Mpho Parks Tau,
  • The MEC of Human Settlements & COGTA in Gauteng Mr Lebogang Maile,
  • The National Minister of COGTA, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma,
  • The National Minister of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries, Ms Barbara Creecy

to investigate the entire Waste crisis enveloping the City, the problems associated with daily Round collection, the closure of 4 of the 5 landfill sites, the non-payment of the private landfill sites, the vacancies in the department, the lack of proper supply chain and contract management, the hollowing out of infrastructure and expertise and to provide comprehensive report to the Residents affected. The report should be made public as soon as possible.

Immediate and Public action should be taken against those at fault and under whose watch this crisis started.

We the Residents of the City of Ekurhuleni deserve to live in a healthy environment where Section 24 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa provides a mandate on the State to ensure environmental protection and ecologically sustainable development.

The National Environmental Management: Waste Act 59 of 2008 aims to reform the law regulating waste management in order to protect health and the environment by providing reasonable measures for the prevention of pollution and ecological degradation and for securing ecologically sustainable development.
