Delaware's Dirty Water

Delaware's water is UNSAFE! According to an article on the Delaware online newspaper in 2014, in 94% of streams and rivers fish can’t thrive, and in 85% of Delaware's water people can’t swim. A lot of Delaware's drinking water that do not even meat the standard for the Federal Clean Water Act. Delaware's current water policy does not work! Delaware needs a new policy to fix its polluted water.

For our chosen policy, it is a combination of bestowing major fines upon individuals, groups, or companies that are caught polluting in the Delaware River and weekly water cleanups to make river up to standards. Heavier fines will be placed on large factories being caught draining toxic waste and other harmful chemicals into the Delaware River. The fines will be distributed by the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control who will use the money to pay for organizers of the weekly water cleanups. The water cleanups will count as service hours for students and criminals. The volunteers will spend their day walking along the river, picking up trash they find in the waters. This will address the problem because the major fines deter people from littering, while helping to pay for the organization of weekly water cleanups. The weekly water clean ups will reduce the amount of litter and trash in and around the Delaware River.
