Free Transport to for Imberhorne Upper children from Crawley Down

The Government dictate that ALL school age children who live over 3 miles away from their school by the nearest available route should be entitled to free school transport.

In Crawley Down, most children do live more than 3 miles away and meet this criteria, except when the Worth Way is added into the equation as an available route.

As a parent, this infuriates me, particularly in the winter months when this route is frankly unsafe and potentially dangerous!

I do not feel the Worth Way should be used to exclude school pupils from meeting the criteria for free access to transport in the winter because:

  1. It is a dirt track, and in the winter the muddy surface becomes slippery, and dangerous.
  2. There is no street lighting, and for students who are on twilight GCSEs, etc, this is a safety issue of travelling back in the dark.  A 15 year old Imberhorne Upper pupil was attacked not far from school in broad daylight this month-safety should be taken seriously by the council
  3. When the council cut back the bushes that line the Worth Way, (as they have done just recently) the pathway becomes riddled with sharp thorns that cause pupils who cycle to get multiple punctures. My child has had this happen at numerous times, usually when it is raining/dark. The Felbridge bicycle shop has explained that it has been fantastic business for them-but clearly no good for cyclists or safety.

Personally, I would be happy, even if the council would just dis-regard this route even if just for the winter months when they are at their most treacherous.  I don't know many adults that would choose to come back every day by foot/bike in the winter that way-so why do they feel it's adequate to force parents/students to make this choice for minors?

They argue that a parent should accompany the child home... But lets be realistic... The majority of parents of senior school age children have returned to work-and this isn't always realistic or practical-especially if they are not coming from work in East Grinstead.

Let's see if we can get enough support to make a change for safety for the children of Crawley Down!
