Although heavy thunder and lightning may be loud, the decibels (pitch) are relatively low compared to the high decibels of fireworks. High decibels are experienced by certain animal types 80 times more intense than by a human.
Also, animals are generally far more in zync with nature. Because of the time lapse between the moment of lightning and the crack followed, they have time to prepare and take cover. And although they 'understand' nature, they will seek some protection, whereas the sound of fireworks confuses and bewilders them...hence they run blindly. They do not understand the threat or danger or know where it comes from. They are indeed traumatised beyond our understanding. The numerous reports of displaced/lost animals are significant proof of this fact.
