JUSTICE TO DISMISSED TUTOR

MARTYN REUBY DISMISSED AND BLACKLISTED.

WHO BY? UNITE THE UNION

On Tuesday afternoon 11th March Unite Tutor Martyn Reuby received a phone call from the South East Education Officer and was told his services are no longer required. Astonished and shocked Martyn asked why? To this date no reason has been given.

A Unite member for more than 30 years and experienced Tutor, Martyn was asked to help with the education programme in Unite’s new South East region post merger. He has been an outstanding Tutor, doing a job that he has loved, training up reps to become effective representatives, building their confidence and skills, supporting and encouraging their development.  You only have to ask members who have attended his courses and look at his fantastic course appraisals, to see what an asset and credit he is to our union.

Martyn has not been informed how he has offended the Education Dept, but as one of the best Tutors in Unite, it is not about the training he delivers. It appears that quality and effectiveness of training by the Education Dept is being sacrificed. Martin now faces being blacklisted throughout Unite and not being able to get any work tutoring at all.

Zero hours contracts

What is clear is that Martyn is the latest victim of Zero Hours policy for Tutors. Unite’s denial of responsibilities as an employer has allowed the Education Dept to end Martyn’s work with:

  • No explanation, no understanding of what has happened
  • No meeting, no right to discuss or be represented
  • No warning
  • No right of appeal

We are a democratic union

Unite is a democratic union. And we are all entitled to make our views known when senior officials act like unscrupulous employers.

Support Martyn’s campaign for reinstatement as a Unite Tutor.

We are asking members to make your voices heard to ensure that Unite acts properly as an employer and as a union in organising members’ education. Delivering the highest quality education service for members and reps should come first and that is in everyone’s interest.

What can you do? The Regional and Executive committees need to be told we won’t tolerate a union acting in this manner and this is what we can do:

  1. Sign the petition calling for Martyn’s reinstatement.
  2. Branches to pass the motion and send to your Regional committees calling for action.
  3. Spread the word - circulate this to other shop stewards in your region and sector.

Thank you for your support.

Motion 1

Martyn Reuby was dismissed as a Tutor by Unite the Union without being provided with any reason or redress.

We call upon our Union to reinstate Martyn Reuby as a Unite Tutor.

Motion 2

We call upon Unite the Union to act to improve the management of Education Services and end the blight of zero-hours contracts for Unite Tutors which tarnishes Unite’s name.

It is well known that the vulnerable position of workers on zero hours contracts leads to exploitation and abuse by employers.

It is unsustainable that Unite conducts a campaign against Zero Hours contracts while abusing the vulnerability of its own workforce.

Unite must act now to stop Education Services falling into disrepute.
