Open letter to President Barzani regarding kurds in Syria

Open letter regarding Rojava, from the Kurdish Medical Association in Sweden, to the President of Iraqi Kurdistan, Mr Massoud Barzani.

Mr President,

Kurdish history during the 20th century has been marked by violence and death. Our people have suffered several genocides such as, the genocide in Zilan, the genocide in Dersim , Al-Anfal and many more. Hundreds of thousands innocent Kurds have been killed. Hundreds of thousands others have been wounded. Millions have lost their homes.

We had hoped that the 21st century would entail a time of peace and that there would be an end to the killing of innocent Kurds. With the fall of the Saddam regime we have had the opportunity to create a free Kurdistan and a safe haven for all Kurds. Today we are lucky to have our own president and parliament.  For the first time in history our people are experiencing a feeling of safety and stability in Iraqi Kurdistan.

However 21st century has not been kind to all Kurds. Today Rojava is in terror. We are receiving daily reports about innocent Kurdish men, women and children that are being systematically and brutally murdered. Four million Kurds in Syria are suffering the horrors of war.

Mr. President please hear our plea:

  • See to the immediate opening of the border to Rojava so that the families that need to flee the horrors of war can find a safe haven for themselves. Allow injured and others in need of medical care to cross the border so that they can seek help.
  • Give assistance to Kurdish and international help organizations so that humanitarian aid can be provided. Allow them to cross the borders.
  • Do not let ideological differences among Kurdish political parties be the reason for the loss of innocent lives. Please find a common ground with other political parties so that we together can help our people.

Mr. President, how we choose to help the people in Rojava will echo for an eternity in our history. We must act for the sake of future Kurdish generations so that they will not be ashamed of us for not taking a stand for Rojava.

Sincerely,

Kurdish Medical Association in Sweden
