Petition for Voting Rights for Curaçao Nationals Abroad

Short description

Grant Right to vote in the elections for the Parliament of Curaçao to all Caribbean Dutch born in Curaçcao and persons who have acquired the Dutch nationality while living in Curaçao. Caribbean Dutch living outside of Curaçao do not have voting rights in the elections for the Parliament of Curaçao. Voting rights are basic rights of citizens in present day democratic societies, and nationals living abroad normally also enjoy these rights.

Policy voted upon by the Parliament of Curaçao affects the Caribbean Dutch nationals abroad directly and indirectly, while they are not represented in Parliament.

In this petition we demand the right to vote in elections for the Parliament of Curaçao for all Caribbean Dutch living outside of Curaçao. We appeal to all inhabitants of Curaçao and to all former inhabitants living abroad. We reach out to the Curaçaoan diaspora in the world: students, workers, employed and unemployed professionals, pensioners, sportsmen, artists, and others who live abroad. We invite everyone who believes voting rights are basic rights and that inclusion of all Caribbean Dutch nationals of Curaçao will strenghten and broaden democracy in Curaçao to sign the petition.

Ascertain

In the Kingdom of the Netherlands there is inequality between the European Dutch and the Caribbean Dutch with regard to voting rights. The European Dutch born in the Netherlands who live abroad take part in the elections for the Dutch House of Representatives. Besides that, every citizen born in Curaçao who has lived for ten or more years in a Dutch municipality maintain their voting rights for this parliament when they settle abroad. On the other hand, the Curacao Parliament denies voting right to the Caribbean Dutch born or naturalized in Curaçao who live abroad. The Dutch Caribbean living in Curacao have the same voting rights for the European Parliament as the European Dutch in other parts of the world.

Petition

We petition the Parliament and indirectly the Government of Curaçao to eliminate the exclusion of the Caribbean Dutch of Curaçao living abroad from the elections for the Parliament of Curaçao.
