Plague of flies in the Rooiwal and surrounding areas

AfriForum Apiesrivier Landelik Branch demands action from the Tshwane Metropolitain Municipality to resolves the plague of flies in the Rooiwal and surrounding areas

Since about September 2014, the presence of flies in the Rooiwal and surrounding areas has become unbearable.  This situation is unprecedented.

We believe that the activities at the Rooiwal sewerage plant are no longer effective and are responsible for this situation.

The stakeholders in the area experience the following:

·         Agricultural workers find the plague of flies unbearable and refuse to work on the lands.

·         Visitors find the situation offensive and avoid the resorts and entertainment facilities in the area.

·         Children have difficulty attending to their studies at the local schools such as Unifees Laerskool.

·         Residents fear for their health due to the adverse affect of the flies.

·         Laundry is contaminated by flies when left to dry.

·         People cannot enjoy their properties outside their residences.

·         Residents and businesses (resturant) have difficulty preparing meals without being contaminated by        flies.

·         Flies contaminate vegetable crops rendering them unusable and causing financial damage.

·         Livestock and pets suffer from the flies and often require medical treatment.

·         The cost of insecticides to control the plague is unaffordable.

·        The insecticides are ineffective due to the large infestation of flies.

·         The high usage insecticides has an adverse affect on the environment.

The consequences include:

·         The residents and businesses in the area have suffered financial loss.

·         Economic activity has been adversely affected.

·         The health of people in the area is under threat.

·         The environment is under threat.

·        Property prices will be adversely affected.
