Reduce Rates and Land Tax in Canberra

COVID-19 has merely exacerbated an already significant problem facing ACT residents and investors. Over the past year alone, the rates for houses increased by an average of 7% and units by approximately 11%. ABS statistics show that in 2011-12 government revenue totalled $209 million, but by 2019, revenue sat at around $492 million. Commercial rates have risen even more steeply, the effect compounded by changed land valuations in numerous Canberra suburbs.

Whilst this rise in rates was described as a means of levelling out the abolition of stamp duty, the latter is a static, one-off payment, whereas rates are an expense regularly incurred and increased. Furthermore, the promised abolition of stamp duty will not be seen across all purchases until 2032. This means there are many forced to pay both stamp duty and ever-increasing rates.

With the current economic climate significantly impacted by COVID-19, now more than ever, Canberrans need action from our local government. Rates and land tax need to be reduced to make living in the ACT more sustainable.
