Request for Installation of Traffic Lights in Kingfisher Avenue

Introduction

The lack of adequate access to the N17 highway from areas east of Sunward Park as well as existing and planned development has made the Class 3 section of Kingfisher Avenue between Trichardts and Rondebult Rd the major feeder to the N17, carrying a huge amount of unplanned traffic load.

At peak hours it is almost impossible to enter or cross any of the intersections with Kingfisher Ave between Rondebult Rd and Duiker Rd, due to the excessive speed at which the general traffic stream is travelling in both directions on Kingfisher Ave.

Affected intersections  include Oberon Rd / Cresta Rd, Harp Rd,  Mini Rd and Nicholson Rd respectively with Kingfisher Avenue.

Enforcement of the speed limit of 60km/h is currently non-existent along this stretch of road.

Conclusion

Traffic speed calming measures should be considered in Kingfisher Ave between Duiker Rd and Rondebult Rd, to reduce the travelling speed of motorists and provide sufficient platooning and efficient traffic flow at side streets.

The logical location for such traffic calming measures could be at either Mini Rd or Harp Rd, as both are located fairly central to this section of road.

Petition

We, the undersigned, as concerned residents and ratepayers of Sunward Park and its various Extensions, request the installation of a set of traffic lights by the Ekurhuleni Metro at its own cost, at either the intersection of Kingfisher Ave with Mini Rd or Harp Rd in Sunward Park.

We appeal for the Ekurhuleni Metro to take up our request as a matter of urgency before serious accidents occur.
