As a 70 year old life long member of the USCF I can state that chess:
1) Teaches critical thinking
2) Is an ice breaker for meeting new people
3) Provides a non-drug use of adolescent free-time.
4) Let's females experience that gender doesn't exclude them mastering a worldwide activity (ask the Polgar sisters).
5) Chessboard puzzels provide a challenge that can be done in periods of isolation.
