What a cruel place South Africa has become!!!! The animal care workers are overloaded!

(Vereeniging, 2017-02-22)

#204

Please stop this ridiculous inhumane trade. This is work animals, not slaughter animals. Donkeys are very loveable and intelligent. Why should they be murdered to make products to look younger. We will all die at some point, if you look young or not. Looking young, will not make you immortal. This is sickening to think these precious animals are killed, for stupid chinese religious beliefs, that our animal parts can be used as cures. If thats the case, then humans must also have parts that can cure illnesses, and then humans must also be slaughtered. Please stop these silly killings.

(Jeffreysbay, 2017-02-22)

#255

donkeys are not farmed animals, they are beasts of burden and transport. They should never be used for their skins or meat, certainly not on another continent

(cape town, 2017-02-22)

#259

Apart from the cruel way in which these animals are being slaughtered, the "rape" of South Africa's resources by the Chinese continues at an alarming rate which does not exclude anything they desire. Unlike the rhino and other exotic and inigenous animals ( that need to be preserved for the continuation of the specie) that they kill en masse and at a rate and speed that guarentees extinction. The donkey is a WORK animal in South Africa which can mean the difference between life and starvation to our many rural families, who make up the bulk of our population. So what is going to happen to these thousamds of families when most of the donkeys are slaughtered by the Chinese and a donkeys price because they becone rare and hard to obtain, shoots through the roof and out of the poor mans reach? Simple...no fields ploughed, no transport to towns for supplies,medical help or for selling of produce and making a living....starvation and destitution. WAKE UP AND STOP THIS BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE.

To Whom It May Concern
I refer to the Media Statement issued on 21 February 2017 by the Department of Rural, Environment and Agricultural Development in respect of the Donkey Production and Trade.
I am absolutely appalled at the Department’s decision to implement the donkey skin trade project, as are many other people in the country.
I understand that donkey skin is used in the production of ejiao, which is used in Chinese medicine, however the use of donkeys for this purpose has completely exploited them and has depleted China’s own donkey population. We do not need to exploit our animals for the sake of China’s demand. We have already seen what the demand for Africa’s animals for “medicinal” purposes has done to our rhinos as well as our pangolin and many other species.
Donkeys form a vital part of many communities – they have many uses in rural areas and villages including carrying goods to market, cultivating land, fetching and carrying household essentials or pulling carts (to name a few). By allowing them to become a mere commodity and capitalising on them, this will affect their traditional roles to communities, affect the people who have relied on them for thousands of years and increase the price for them, making them inaccessible to poorer people.
In addition to the above, the current demand for donkeys will mean that these animals will essentially need to be factory farmed where they will live in terrible conditions simply to be ultimately killed for their skin and/or meat. The welfare of the animals will not be important, but rather only their commercial value.
I, along with many other South Africans, have an ethical issue with the use of donkeys merely for their skin and meat. This is simply another way to exploit animals and I vehemently object to the proposed donkey skin project as set out in the aforementioned media statement.
There needs to be more consideration other than to the projected profit and economic benefit which may accrue.
I hereby request that the Department:
1. revoke its decision to proceed with the project;
2. terminate the trade agreement in place with the Chinese Government;
3. put in place a ban on the export of donkey skins to China; and
4. put in place legislative measures to ensure the protection of donkeys against this trade.
