NO high density multi-unit bldgs on Young Avenue

#201

I'm signing because Council must show backbone in protecting heritage and keeping it's own commitments. Catering to a single developer to go against earlier decisions is very bad for the city, its residents and the integrity of Council and its planning documents.

Brian Gifford (Halifax, 2019-12-02)

#205

Young Avenue is an architectural jewel of special merit. Bad behaviour by developers should not be rewarded.

Paul Donovan (Halifax, 2019-12-02)

#208

I'm signing because I believe in maintaining the heritage of Young Avenue instead of helping the growth of developers and realtors who are only concerned with money.

Christopher Hemsworth (Halifax, 2019-12-02)

#210

If this motion is approved, it would seem to confirm that the Halifax city council and its Planning authority are playing with a stacked deck of cards and the wishes of the general public are laughingly brushed aside.

Patrick McGonigal (Merigomish, 2019-12-02)

#212

What a bad precedent. If passed, it will encourage predatory development and "old boy network" political lobbying in every R1 neighbourhood in the city. Most of the old mansions on Young Avenue would disappear in a decade or two if this sort of precedent is set. I hope Council realizes that this is 2019 and this sort of 20th century back-room dealing is unacceptable to citizens.

David Piper (Halifax, 2019-12-02)

#218

I agree with points outlined in this petition to prevent high density development on Young Avenue.

Diana Torbert (Halifax, 2019-12-02)

#219

Stop selling out to cheap developments in historic neighborhoods.

Michaele Matthews (herring cove, 2019-12-02)

#222

This is not a fire drill. We are quickly making the city a place no one wants to live or even visit. Please pay attention.

Gwen Davies (Halifax, 2019-12-02)

#223

I am opposed to this development proposal in the heritage housing area of Halifax where there are already multiple highrise developments taking place on Wellington , South Park and Fenwick Streets.

Petra Mudie (Halifax, 2019-12-02)

#224

I feel that it is extremely important to protect the homes on Young Avenue, a vital and integral part of Halifax history and heritage.

The homes represent many aspects of Halifax history, including the Titanic tragedy.

It is essential to preserve our culture and heritage.

Deanna M. Ryan-Meister
President
Titanic Society of Atlantic Canada

Deanna Ryan-Meister (Timberlea, 2019-12-02)

#226

Developers have been allowed to change the character of our city- to its detriment. Halifax is losing it's special charm and people will no longer wish to come here as tourists, locals will no longer have special places to go to.

Cynthia Moore (Dartmouth, 2019-12-02)

#227

It's a shame that all the old, established neighbourhoods are being developed in favor of new buildings. We need to save our heritage. I'm totally against this proposed development.

LeighAnne Kenney (Spryfield, NS, 2019-12-02)

#228

I am signing this petition as I oppose the redevelopment of Young avenue. This is a street visited when I am giving tours to friends and visitors around the city of Halifax.

William Gard (Lower Sackville, 2019-12-02)

#233

I am a member of the Titanic Society of Atlantic Canada and very much involved in everything concerning Titanic. Last year I wrote an article on George Wright and his houses in Halifax- with the help of Dee Ryan-Meister.

Gertrud Schmidt (Freudenberg, 2019-12-02)

#236

I am astounded that anyone on City Council would even consider supporting the developer on this. I fully support any effort to take city planning out of the hands of developers. It is a major quality of life issue and my support and vote would never go to a councillor who allows developers to use their money and influence to have their way. I fully support Councillor Waye Mason’s position on this and feel Councillor Adams’ initiative is reprehensible.

Joseph Pratt (Halifax , 2019-12-02)

#241

Halifax can preserve it's historic and scenic hoods while also having some development. This will ultimately make the city more attractive than rampant building on the peninsula.

Margaret Spore (Halifax, 2019-12-02)

#244

This change will only benefit a small few while forcing local tenured residents to deal with increased noise and traffic volumes, while the overall aesthetic, and history of Young Ave will be slowly destroyed for cookie-cutter homes that no one wants. This is a horrible idea predicated by those who don't live int he neighborhood and simply only care about money.

James Wolff (Halifax, 2019-12-02)

#246

This nasty man has destroyed enough of the south end. His proposal makes a mockery of the City's planning process and Steve Adams is an embarrassment.

Doug Kirkaldy (Halifax, 2019-12-02)

#247

I am discouraged and dismayed by the pro developer actions of Mr Adams that seek to side step the elected representative for this district, ignore the interests and wishes of property owners as well the centre plan and all the work to date . Please do not allow this vote to succeed and establish a precedent of revisiting previous decisions based on extensive consultation.

Lynn McAslan (HALIFAX, 2019-12-02)

#250

I feel strongly that Young Ave should be kept low density and regain some of the beauty that has been lost.

Catherine Read (Halifax, 2019-12-02)

#251

I frequently visit Halifax for its history and charm. This plan wipes away a good part of both of those qualities.

David Kaplan (Petoskey, Michigan, 2019-12-02)

#252

I'm signing because Young Ave is a beautiful, historic Halifax landmark that needs to be preserved!

Sherry Stewart (Halifax, 2019-12-02)

#253

Because I value the heritage of this neighbourhood and also disapprove of the nature and timing of this motion that contravenes previous decisions of the Council.

Margaret Sagar (Halifax, 2019-12-02)

#258

Am signing this because changing the zoning at this time before Package B is completed, is plainly ridiculous. HRM concil would do better to use their valuable time in solving the horrendous traffic problems each day in our city, before they give more OKs to large re-developments in the city.

Eugene Mio (Halifax, N.S., 2019-12-02)

#259

I strongly object to this plan that will drastically alter Young Ave. One of the Halifax’s finest residential streets . And what does the councillor of Spryfield have to do with ( or what is his motive and who’s interests are he backing) the
street scape and Southend Halifax ?
We need to maintain some areas as residential and Young Ave is exactly one of those areas and zones that need protecting .

Linda Black (Halifax, 2019-12-02)

#261

Halifax's historic Young Avenue is a an important part of our city. Its unique architecture has integrity, elegance and beauty. It needs to be protected. When we tear down our architectural jewels and replace them with characterless shoebox buildings, we lose more than just buildings; we lose touch with the heart of our city.

D Metzger (Halifax, 2019-12-02)

#262

I agree with saving the current streetscape

Helen Anstey (Dartmouth, 2019-12-03)

#265

Maintaining historic streetscapes preserves Halifax’s character

Joanna Jeffery (Halifax, 2019-12-03)

#266

High-rise development has gone far enough. Council - show some spine and reject this option

Peter Dunn (Halifax, 2019-12-03)

#267

I'm signing because I'm fed up with Council's ongoing disregard for making special dispensations to developers whose plans are in contravention of existing zoning, planning, heritage preservation and wishes of the taxpaying residents of Halifax.

Elizabeth Burke (Halifax, 2019-12-03)

#270

Innapropriate development is destroying the heritage and the historic streetscapes of our city.

Ken Hynes (Halifax , 2019-12-03)

#271

Because we cannot lose our history and heritage!

Judith Galbraith (Grand Bay-Westfield, 2019-12-03)

#272

I want to stop the careless destruction of the heritage properties in the city. Quite frankly I am tired of councillors from outside the city working to destroy the historic centre of my city.

Nancy Lewis (Halifax, 2019-12-03)

#273

I do not believe there should be high rises in this historic area of Halifax.

Carroll Collins (Lantz, 2019-12-03)

#280

I am signing this petition as this is one street that should maintain its historic nature and is suitable for only R-1 zoning.

Dennice Leahey (Halifax, 2019-12-03)

#281

There is truly a lack of understanding and vision with the Development in HRM.

Kirsty Money (Halifax NS, 2019-12-03)

#284

HRM should not be entertaining this motion.

Chris Annand (Halifax, 2019-12-03)

#286

Young Avenue is the most historic and grand neighbourhood in Halifax.

Joshua Thomson (Saint John, 2019-12-03)

#294

I very much agree with #4. I know the City has recently raised fees for demolishing buildings - but it is still less than the development fee. The city needs to protect prospective heritage buildings and streetscapes - with a process to review demolition requests of buildings pre-dating 1918 - or even 1939 - which is the date that Vancouver uses.
I am not particularly supportive of the R-1 designation protection - to convert existing buildings to new uses is necessary and environmentally healthy.

Janet Morris (Halifax, 2019-12-03)

#299

I value the historic character of Young street which is a National historic Treasure. I think that council needs to uphold the 2017 decision and should complete package B. Community voices havd opposed the destruction of this R-1 zoned street, and the council has a moral and ethical, and political. obligation to listen to the input from us. I think that our historic neighbourhoods add to both the quality of life in Halifax, and to the economy, through their attractiveness of the city for tourism.

Margaret Callahan (Indian Harbour, 2019-12-03)

#300

Young Avenue is a historic part of Halifax that deserves preservation. Of my particular concern is the Titanic-related homes.

Sheryl Rinkol (Half Moon Bay, California, 2019-12-03)

#302

Halifax city council has an opportunity to be the leaders they have been elected to be by voting against this proposal. It is wrong to put the financial want of an individual above the needs of a city/community. Communities stay strong and vibrant when respected and working together, not when torn apart by greed and selfishness. High density buildings are not apart of this historic landscape.
Council, we have trusted you in your position to look out for the best interests of our city and it’s constituents- do the right thing and vote no to this development. Anything less and you are not speaking for your city and in it’s best interest.

Jane Mitsiopoulos (Halifax, 2019-12-03)

#306

I am upset with the initial decision and tired of the council making rules and then changing them for the first developer who wants then changer. Staff made recommendations, council accepted them , end of story

Robert Sime (Halifax, 2019-12-03)

#307

I disagree with allowing high density multi use buildings on Young Avenue.

Malcolm Norton (Halifax, 2019-12-03)

#309

I'm signing because I moved to this beautiful city for it's rich heritage and history. It saddens me to see buildings go up past present or future that ignore this unique perspective. Also the community involved should definitely be heard and their collective requirements be respected. It seems obvious to me, and I don't think I'm alone in this view, that Mr. Adams motivations are to make the most profit he can with a cheap and inappropriate design for this neighborhood. I respect making a profit, but it must go hand in hand with respecting the community and the environment (green tech?) Quality matters, don't be a council that leaves a permanent blemish on the landscape.

Elizabeth Galesloot (Halifax, 2019-12-03)

#311

It is important to protect historic areas in the city of Halifax, at least those remaining, and esp. from more high rise developments. Tourists do not come to the city to see tall buildings!

Linda Lewis (Halifax, 2019-12-03)

#314

I am responding to this because I have conducted real estate business in this area for 35+ years. My high end clients gravitate to this area. This is incredibly unbelievable. Allowing the total destruction of a prime and renowned residential area that honors its past through its rich pieces of history is nauseating to say the least. There is nothing positive in this movement for the residents of this exclusive historical area.

Bea MacDonald (Lunenburg, 2019-12-03)

#317

The author's of this petition have expressed my opinion very well. I feel very strongly this kind of aggressive bullying of council by greedy developers must be resisted!

James Creighton (Halifax, 2019-12-03)

#318

The residents and councillor responsible for this area have spoken, they do not approve of this proposal. Their wishes must be respected and Council must do better protect Historic Places.

Bryan Wood (Halifax, 2019-12-03)

#319

This development proposed for Young Avenue is not only a violation of the 2017 legislation, it is a radically beyond anything that is compatible. It is blatantly a push against the law and neighbour hood by special private interest of the Councilman and developer.

Deborah Jones (Halifax, 2019-12-03)

#320

I believe in saving the integrity of this neighbourhood.

Joanne Rivest (Dartmouth, 2019-12-03)

#326

I’m signing this petition because the development proposal is an outrageous, greedy, tasteless, unnecessary and soul and community destroying proposal.

James Gould (Halifax, 2019-12-03)

#328

I am tired of developers bulldozing the city's built heritage and ruining city scapes.

Allan Bardlsey (Head of St. Margaret’s Bay, 2019-12-03)

#333

I agree with all 11 points listed in this petition - especially number 9.

Bill Niven (Halifax, 2019-12-03)

#334

I strongly support the reservation of Halifax's historic buildings and streetscapes.

Dan Jackson (Halifax, 2019-12-03)

#335

I mistrust the motive of this councilor and the developer. I think Young Avenue should be preserved.

Martha Curry (Halifax, NS, 2019-12-03)

#339

This is absolutely disgusting and outrageous- and against the by laws. This would dramatically change the aesthetic and vibe of the neighborhood. The decision should not be made by councillors who have no direct association with the neighborhood. All councillors should be asked to sign 10 year agreements to not profit/work for developers after their terms.

Stephanie Nickerson (Halifax, 2019-12-03)

#343

I want this area preserved

Roy Shipley (Halifax, 2019-12-03)

#345

Provincial Legislation was passed zoning this area for 1 acre lots with single families around 1900.City Council have denigrated the intention of the original law with specious arguments which reward greed and diminish this as a gracious gateway to Point pleasant Park, while avoinding infill, other housing solutions for the marginalized.

Bill Jordan (Halifax, 2019-12-03)

#348

I'm signing because I support our Councilperson who has worked very hard to have good zoning laws that balance development and density. I cannot understand why this is being challenged by somebody who does not represent our area.

Torgny Vigerstad (Halifax, 2019-12-04)

#350

There are many reasons why this motion should not be passed, as outlined in the petition.

Ray Baker (Halifax , 2019-12-04)

#353

Of course we all want to see this development and the corrupt errand boy councillor stopped in it's tracks. By all means. But next time a developer wants to evict the working class and the poor from their homes, lets all get equally outraged, k?

David Frevola (Halifax, 2019-12-04)

#354

I have enjoyed Point Pleasant for years as a dog walker. I attended SMU and lived in the area. That whole section of the South End is gem. People do not visit Europe for the massive Convention Centres and sprawling high density apartments. They visit for history, culture, heritage, texture and personality. Why does this city insist on selling it's soul to rich land speculators who don't value the rich heritage of this city??? It's more than lining the pockets of a few wealthy people!

Tracy Milsom (Dartmouth, 2019-12-04)

#356

Young Ave is a part of the cultural heritage of our beautiful city. It’s time that we take preservation of this heritage more seriously. I am
not someone who has ever been against tall or multiunit buildings but they should always reflect the character of the neighbourhood. I live in North End Halifax but I love this city and I would very much like yo see this area protected.

Maureen MacDonald (Halifax , 2019-12-04)

#359

I’m signing because in spite of community concern and city staff opposition, most councillors seem to be listening only to the developers who want to add density through high rises in neighbourhoods that do not want them and cannot support the traffic. Our beautiful city is being ruined. Is there a centre plan or not!?!

Sharon Nicolle (Halifax , 2019-12-06)

#361

The historic and cultural significance of Young Ave needs to be preserved. To commercialize the neighborhood would be a severe act of ignorance and apathy toward the community.

Dinini Lee (Halifax , 2020-03-27)

#362

I don't want high-rises on Young Ave. That street is a historical street with historical buildings and architecture, high-rises would ruin the historical value of the street and it's architecture.

It is also a street with a lot of nature, trees and plants, a high-rise would stick out like a sore thumb.

Mimisu Lee (Halifax, 2020-03-27)

#363

I don't want high-rises on Young Ave. That street is a historical street with historical buildings and architecture, high-rises would ruin the historical value of the street and it's architecture.

It is also a street with a lot of nature, trees and plants, a high-rise would stick out like a sore thumb.
