Keep the Rebels name

This is more about a name. It is a tradition that has nothing to do with racial issues.

Maria Wright (Maryville, 2020-06-20)

#206

I do not agree with changing the name.

Don’t take our tradition away! Here is what rebel means, nothing more, nothing less. My mom referred to me as a rebel (and still does) and this is why:
The definition of a rebel is a person who stands up to or defies authority. An example of a rebel is a person involved in a political uprising. An example of a rebel is a teenager who is defying his parents.
Period.

There is absolutely no reason to remove the rebel from the school. I played ball there and it has never been an issue until now.

Devon McCroskey (Maryville, 2020-06-20)

Here is a great article on how maryville got the name rebels. I had to do with them using illegal football players and the coach called themselves "rebels" https://www.thedailytimes.com/news/confederate-flag-has-tenuous-history-in-county-schools/article_02622331-54e1-52de-944b-7867f13ee4a6.html

MHS was not always the Rebels, that name came about many years ago when they were caught playing an illegal player and they were sanctioned by TSAA and were banned in the post season. They finished their season undefeated anyway and their coach at the time told them at the end they played like a bunch of Rebels and the name has stuck ever sense. We do things our own way, usually the right way judging by our trophy case.

Doug Owenby (Maryville , 2020-06-20)

I totally agree with Eric Russell and support this petition.

Sandra Price (Maryville, 2020-06-21)

The rebels is history of the school and the positive spirit that goes along with it. It would be a huge mistake to remove the Rebels!

Angela Gamble (Maryville , 2020-06-21)

I work in Maryville and I think they should keep there name because it is the schools identity! No need to change it!

Greg Bruce (Knoxville , 2020-06-21)

I believe in freedom and words can do no harm. Names of sports teams are just names. There are many types of Rebels. Not all are associated with the Confederate States.

Bobby Monday (Knoxville , 2020-06-21)

As an Alcoa Tornado, I don’t see the necessity to change the Rebel name . It has been the MHS Rebels as long as I can remember, don’t erase all the history.

#320

Removing this mascot name is due to a few trying to impose their will on many. Besides it is neither racial or should it be controversial. To many times people bow to those who are just looking for something to be offended by.

Being a Maryville Rebel is not only a tradition in our 3 generation family but it is not and never has been any symbol other than Maryville Rebels. No hidden agenda, no hidden meanings, no NOTHING other than being a Maryville Rebel. If this offends others I feel very sorry for them because if our Rebels are offensive then their lives will be filled with constant offensive things. We are Maryville Rebels. If this mascot is taken from us it will be the latest travesty of this hysteria of troubling times. Please do NOT do something that is simply not necessary. Allow us to remain what we have been for well over 80 years. Maryville Rebel Proud!

Pamela Speed (Maryville, 2020-06-21)

#338

The charge to change the name is ridiculous. I hereby petition to keep the team name Red Rebels. The mascot name is by no means offensive and should NOT be changed for any reason.

Jim Williams (Maryville , 2020-06-21)

Our family moved here from New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Maryville has been good to our family. I’ve raised 4 Maryville Red Rebels. They all have excellent work ethic, respect and love for everyone, and received (2 currently enrolled) a wonderful education. We are a diverse family. We are Maryville REBELS!

Felicia Murret (Maryville, 2020-06-21)

#351

Go Rebels. Ridiculous that this is even being something that is even considered. The group that is protesting Rebels needs to find something to do. Maybe get a job.

Sandy Caughron (Maryville, 2020-06-21)

I grew up in Maryville and was a Rebel and the name has withstood the test of time. The name has nothing to do with race, hatred, or discrimination; it’s history, heritage, and all the nostalgia of what growing up a Maryville Rebel was all about. It was the best time of our lives.
-Proud to be a 1994 Maryville Rebel

Carly Pearson (Maryville, 2020-06-21)

#375

Maryville High School has no visible mascot. I agree with the petition to let the nickname Rebels remain associated with the school.

Lee Arnold (Titusville, 2020-06-21)

#376

I am an MHS alumni. The idea of removing the Rebel name is preposterous. Why are we allowing our traditions to be removed in order to appease an easily triggered mob? A mob that is hell bent on erasing history. This seems to be the current state of affairs in the United States. I can remember when another MHS symbol was removed in order to satisfy this same mob. The more these people are given, the more they take. It is time for someone stand up and defend our history, before it is too late.

Jonathan Bownas (Orlando , 2020-06-21)

Enough is enough! I am tired of the pansy ass titty babies crying foul everytime they lose their balls to leave things alone, and especially as an elected official to want to save their so called career. Learn your history folks instead of trying to erase it.

Just another example of people trying to get rid of something without knowing the truth. Regardless of opinions on the issue of “rebels” and the Confederacy. Facts don’t care about your feelings. Go REBELS!

Wesley Ferguson (Maryville, 2020-06-21)

Keep the rebels ! Time to stop letting a few dictate to others what to do. Nothing wrong with calling a school rebels its only what a few make of it. Its totally rediculious

Judy Smith (Maryville , 2020-06-21)

It seems like some former MHS Rebels are rebelling against the MHS Rebel name. I wonder where they got that rebel spirit? Keep the Rebel name!
