I'm signing on behalf of Warehouse9 (DK) in solidarity with the tenants at No. 6 Metelkova Street because it is our understanding that the responsibility of a Ministry of Culture is to work to support arts and culture, and not to work against it.

The organisations, collectives and individuals that are housed No. 6 Metelkova are internationally recognised for their important work in cultural and artistic production, research and advocacy on behalf of minority and marginalised groups.

To evict them in the midst of a global pandemic, with such short notice and without dialogue reproduces hostile action against civil society and independent culture. We therefore ask, in solidarity with the tenants, that the Ministry of Culture in Slovenia keep the building at No. 6 Metelkova Street in use for the current tenants, and work to provide a free, safe and supportive environment for non-governmental organisations.

NGOs and independent cultural platforms are fundamental for true democratic processes and, frankly, to the whole European-tradition of the enlightment, which still holds water, no matter what. I fully support the idea that any Government should help actors who selflessly work towards cultural and artistic developments, even if for specific cultural ends (i.e., non-commercial, non-massified forms of art) and at the margin of capitalist-centred interests.

The lack of places for cultural workers to conduct their activities in Ljubljana is truly horrifying. To take away the space where cultural workers have been creating meaningful and spectacular cultural content since the '90s I feel is a crime especially in the midst of a pandemic and fastly approaching recession.
