WHITE OCCUPATION OF A CHINESE ARTS CENTRE - A CALL TO ACTION

I am signing because this has gone on long enough. Racism is embedded and whenever individuals are asked to help organisations “improve” or “learn” they are shunned, ignored or harrassed. It is time for people to be held to account. If the Arts Council is truly interested in inclusivity and diversity, we dont want to hear words, but rather see action. Dont continue to patronise us with false manifestos and campaigns.

Any type of racism is not acceptable in UK society. Arts Council England should not be supporting such institutional racism as evinced by CFCCA.

We need to stop white wash culture and truly embrace diversity.

Cultural art centres in the UK need to be revised and decolonised starting from the head down to the bottom

I'm signing because these findings are outrageous. Why enable discrimination?!

It’s clear that if an all-white leadership team of a CHINESE ARTS SPACE asks artists of Chinese heritage to help them diversify their workforce, they need to simply step down and make way. The rest is performance. If this was a gender issue (ie an arts space dedicated to women run by men) there would be no need for this petition. The matter would have been dealt with.

Gaylene Gould (London, 2021-05-21)

Solidarity with the artists and belief in their reading of their experience and reading of the situation.

To promote diversity, inclusive and equally. No institute should get away from systemic racism.

I am signing because I recognise a pattern that can be found in other major cultural organisations in the UK and abroad. Marginalised voices need to be heard and I lend my full support to artists, individuals, the public who are discriminated and suffer from institutional racism on an everyday basis.

This happens frequently where organisations use BIPOC’s narratives and history, never employ them, then are shocked when their malpractices are called out.

So-called Chinese Art Center, that is nothing to do with the Art of Chinese.

We keep seeing this time and again - effective grass roots organisations taken over by 'professionals' who have no understanding of or links to their supposed stakeholders. It's a disgrace and rather than improving organisations it always leads to disconnect and corruption.

l'm signing because institutional racism in the arts has to go..space, platform and creative freedom comes from self determination - and not occupation by an elite and privileged few.

Ayse Hassan (Nicosia, 2021-05-21)

I'm signing because it is unacceptable to have publicly funded organisations which are structurally racist and are not allowing investigation into this and for themselves to be held to account for it. As a human being and as a tax-payer, I say 'no, not in my name'.
