Petition against the implementation of a Ban on the Export of Scrap Metal from South Africa

Comments

#1

I run a business that employs 54 people, who will lose their incomes if the ban is implemented. Most of our employees are the sole bread winner in their household with a minimum of 4 direct dependents. Our company also services over 300 businesses that will also loose this legally generated income from the resale of their scrap generated through their businesses and waste collection. Our business only buys from registered businesses.

Nancy Strachan (Durban, 2022-08-19)

Brandon lee Keir (East london, 2022-08-19)

#7

I am signing because government hasn't fully consulted with all rolleplayers in the sector, more specifically the micro and small scrapyard. Taking the route they are currently taking will ensure a negative impact on the local economy and job (direct and indirect) losses

Cheryl Naicker (Clairwood, 2022-08-19)

#8

I’m signing as I’m against this policy

Shaun Day (Durban, 2022-08-19)

#37

The ban will oppress the ability for local companies to compete, it will come at the cost of many jobs of people who are involved in the handling and trading of scrap metal.

Darius Van Niekerk (Cape Town, 2022-08-19)

#39

I support this

Carol Klopper (East London, 2022-08-19)

We are a Dealer and we do business the legitimate way! We have over 40 employees. 90% of our business is generated by informal traders and scrap collectors! We do not buy stolen metals!!!

Juanita Outram (Bendor, 2022-08-19)

#43

Private business should not be punished for the inadequate system of the government. Licensed scrap yards are inspected every few weeks but we give details of illegal scrap yards to SAPS regularly but they dont even go to inspect them.

Tertius Cloete (Cape Town, 2022-08-19)

#45

I'm a scrap dealer and against the ban of export of scrap. What happens to my staff and my family who relies o. My business as a scrap dealer

Udash Naidoo (Durban, 2022-08-20)

#46

I'm am a Scrap dealer and I follow all the rules of the second hand the prices of Scrap Metal is very bad at the moment because of all what is happening I think youl should investigate properly and find the person that is buy illegal goods

Miranding Reddy (Durban, 2022-08-20)

#47

We work in the scrap metal and recycling business. We will end up losing over 40 employees who rely on us to feed their families. Over a 1000 waste pickers rely on us who sells their little bit of cans or scrap to us. This will let poverty go up sky high and crime will drastically increase.

Janine Klopper (East London, 2022-08-20)

#49

I work in the scrap industry and it is my only source of income by the government implementing the ban it will close many companies . And what they are doing is illegal its price fixing and it will have a huge impact on the gdp of the country and the government will lose revenue. 90% of the bigger companies already have government ministers at the helm. So at the end of the day would it not be unfair that they are only enriching them selves and in turn taking the money out of the mouths of the public, who already have no income. It will also make unemployment triple in numbers . Futher crippling the already vulnerable enconomy of south africa

Luke Pescivolo (Midvaal, 2022-08-20)

#51

Thousands will loose their jobs, streets will be lined with scrap

Nadine Burton (Durban, 2022-08-20)

Kubendhran Moodley (Durban , 2022-08-20)

#55

The way in which the government is handling this is unethical and only aims to benefit the mills and foundries. We are already under stain due to the PPS system. Further restrictions will cripple the scrap industry

Keith Richter (Durban, 2022-08-20)

#59

I have been working for a legitimate scrap dealer for 15years and I value my job.

Richard Forster (Durban, 2022-08-21)

Mahesh Bipath (Durban, 2022-08-21)

#61

This ban will ultimately cause the loss of my livelihood.

Elizabeth Gibbley (Durban, 2022-08-21)

#62

I'm signing this petition because it is illegal for government to take food from the mouths of hundreds of families struggling to survive this harsh environment that they do nothing to help South African but dig the hole deeper! Corruption and theft of the highest order.

Eileen Hunter (East London, 2022-08-21)

#63

This is my income and will be on the street without the scrap industry

Caroline Burton (Amanzimtoti, 2022-08-22)

#64

Regulating law abiding citizens via a scrap metal export ban will not address those responsible for illicit activities and the unintended consequences of such a blunt instrument do not appear to have been properly considered.

Mike Wilson (Durban, 2022-08-22)

#65

It's a state capture on scrap..select few
Will make a fortune. On the expense of scrap Dealers..

James Roberts (Durban , 2022-08-22)

#66

State capture of scrap metal recycling

Kim Marais (Pinetown, 2022-08-22)

#67

In an already struggling industry, you want to implement more restrictions than there already is.
Registered scrap dealers already abide by the law and conduct legitimate business dealings. The problem is a crime issue and not a trade issue. It's impossible for all suppliers to apply for second hand goods license.

Montana De Beer (Richard's bay , 2022-08-22)

#68

This is a legitimate industry which many law abiding citizens/entrepreneurs rely on for a honest income to support their family.

Jennifer Cooney (BEDFORD GARDENS, 2022-08-22)

#72

If the ban will be implemented I have no other option I must retrench at least 4 workers to compensate for the loss of income

johan jacobs (klerksdorp, 2022-08-22)

#74

This bill is designed to protect vested interests at the expense of the many who would lose their income as a result of this law.

PETER W H ELSMORE (KEMPTON PARK, 2022-08-22)

#76

I own a small scrapyard in Betulie Free State, and the people here are dependent on our bussisnes for an income to buy daily essentials

Heinrich Brown (Bloemfontein, 2022-08-22)

#79

We have a recycle business we have 15 employees , we do our work according the act. Who will provide for 15 families if this happens?

Changtelle Hough (Springs, 2022-08-22)

#80

I’m signing because I work at a stainless steel and aluminum recycling company. The only mill in South Africa, Columbus is not buying scrap till next year sometime leaving us with the only option of export. With this ban the business can’t continue and many people will be left without jobs.

Ashley Moss (Cape Town , 2022-08-22)

#81

I THINK THAAT THIS PROPOSED BAN WILL HAVE A VERY BIG IMPACT ON LIVELYHOODS AND UNEMPLOYMENT . I ALSO THINK THAT IF THE COPPER IS THE PROBLEM THEN ADDRESS THAT ISSUE AND LEAVE THE OTHER PRODUCTS THAT THERE IS NOT ENOUGH DEMAND FOR LOCALLY IN ORDER TO ENSURE FAIR TRADING WITH INTERNATIONAL MARKETS .

RIKUS VAN DER WESTHUIZEN (STILFONTEIN, 2022-08-22)

#84

Scrap Metal dealers are being victimized by the government due to the inability of the security services to protect infrastructure, where the government is holding scrap Metal dealers ransom for their inability to police at the source.

I am against the implementation of a ban of the export of scrap metal from South Africa due to the consequences it may have on the recycling industry, the informal collectors, scrap generators and it’s employees

Donovan Trump (Johanessburg, 2022-08-22)

#89

Because I'm a Scrap Metal Traders since 1975 I don't buy copper but it will effect the people that bye legitimate copper from Electrisions, Plummer and armature winders the government says they must apply for a 2nd hand goods license it does not make sense that copper is legal but if this is not resolved it could put millions of people out of work, I do not condone the fact that people bye elegal copper if they are court take there trading license away and close them down,And further more all the Cash for Scrap must be closed down they don't have a trading license or pay tax like me and all ligetemet trader do so I say to the government don't close the export market as it will put millions out of work and I don't think South Africa can afford that.

Glen Lincoln (JHB, 2022-08-22)

In my business at least 18 people will be without work.

Cecil Doyle (Vryburg, 2022-08-22)

#98

My family owns a scrap metal recycling business and so many people are going to lose their jobs because of this ban.

Tracy Moss (Cape Town, 2022-08-22)

#99

Banning the export of scrap is only treating the symptoms and not fixing the problem. The materials that we trade in has got no relation to the theft of infrastructure, yet we will also be affected by this. I suggest regular site inspections, especially of those yards that do not have the relevant documentation and procedures in place.
This ban will result in thousands of families losing their only income which could also result in increased crime just to survive.

Frederik Coetzer (Johannesburg, 2022-08-22)

#101

Government making as they please. This can not be allowed. What will happen to all of us already strugling beacause government causes more poverty and job losses, and now this. Not everybody gets a fat paycheck for sitting around and doing nothing. Now government is really screwing people on street level poverty more over, even those who lost jobs and everything during covid pandemic. This is crazy, I really hope International news and media will hear our cry and see this corrupt, useless moaners in power, what they are doing to people of South Africa. More of their greed comes to light during stupid shit like this.

I am a scrap metal dealer ,who have 11 full time workers ,and almost 50 000 registered clients on my system.

Louis Stroebel (Bloemfontein , 2022-08-22)

#138

This could cause u huge lost of employment and also businesses to close down which will leave a lot of people unemployed. This again will have another impact in our country which will also lead to more looting and other problems. Also if they find that a certain product cause problems why not only put an temporary ban on that product instead of having everything blocked. I foresee more problems arising from this action than any good that could come from this. This needs to be revised as this is not a solution to the current problems. This will have an effect world wide.

GERT JANSEN VAN VUUREN (KLERKSDORP, 2022-08-22)

#198

The scrap industry is fital for many poor people who only live by the few rand they make daily by selling their scrap they collect. And by closing the scrap industry more people will lose their jobs in a already unemployd country. Our police service together with companies like Eskom and transnet should be more educated in what actually is illegal metals and our law sistem should be stricter against criminals.
