Bring Back Cash Payment Options to Cairns Regional Council Facilities

Comments

#1

Cash is an important payment option for many residents, including businesses. We used to send staff over to the dump with cash as we don't want to hand over credit cards. We can't do this anymore. We want to have the choice to pay by cash or card.

Birgit Machnitzke (Trinity Beach, 2023-02-23)

#2

People need and always should have a choice in commerce payments

Stelianos Monafis (Palmcove, 2023-02-23)

#5

Not accepting cash is discriminatory to people who do not want to pay credit card fees, are unable to have a credit card for whatever reason, and older people who do not like using cards. If you VOTE, pay taxes and rates, you should be able to pay using any legal method you choose. Cash is king.

Todd Macalpine (Gordonvale, 2023-02-23)

#6

I believe we should be allowed to choose to pay with cash

Yasmin Croghan (Mount Sheridan, 2023-02-23)

#8

You do not have the right to dictate to ratepayers. Council is an elected body and as such reports to its electorate

Wright John (CAIRNS CITY, 2023-02-23)

#10

Because we should have the choice.

Jodie Lynch (Cairns, 2023-02-23)

#11

I disagree with your no cash payment system . Customers should have a choice

Kellee Jayne Martorella (Cairns , 2023-02-23)

#12

Coz I’m 100% against the Credit System

Theodore Ludwick (Yarrabah, 2023-02-23)

#13

IT IS MY WILL to pay in cash.....and I do not consent to an un-elected Council bureaucrat to take the right to pay in legal tender away from me!

Helen Sulley (Cairns, 2023-02-23)

#14

I don't want to see the banks prosper when children are disadvantaged.
I don't like using card and attracting fees

Janet Burcher (Edge Hill, 2023-02-23)

#15

I want to be able to use cash whereever and when ever, particularly as our area is fnq at times we have unusual whether situations that can effect electronics

Debbie Melville (Cairns, 2023-02-23)

#16

I believe that the council should provide facilities for both cash and card

Jason Judkins (Cairns, 2023-02-23)

#18

I do not want a no cash seciety.

Gavin Smith (BAYVIEW HEIGHTS, 2023-02-23)

#19

Cash is legal tender... an absolute disgrace that the council thinks that they have the right to remove our payment options!!

Sharna Fielding (Cair s, 2023-02-23)

#20

Council assumes everyone has access to card banking. Working in social services I know this is not true. Also I personally resent the bank fees paid every time I use card. Cash is legal tender and council has no right to dismiss it

Velvet Eldred (Barron, 2023-02-23)

#22

We do not want digital currency and control and we want a choice to use cash...not give our money to the big banks

Mary Hackett brooks (Cairns, 2023-02-23)

#23

Cash is legal tender. I recently went to a Taipans game at Convention Center and was refused to pay by cash for food

Triesha Clark (Cairns, 2023-02-23)

#25

Cash remains an important part of our economy and shoukd be readily accepted for all public services. Government departments are to serve all of the people, including those who prefer cash.

Melissa Murdoch (Atherton, 2023-02-23)

#27

Cash is a valud form of payment and it is wrong to refuse it

Denise Crew (Cairns, 2023-02-23)

#28

Not everything that is technical possible is good. Cash is a legal tender and I want to have the right and the possibility to pay with cash where ever I am. I can understand that it is convenient for the council to go cashless eg at the transfer station but it is not convenient for me.
Council should also consider that every blackout puts hamstrings on everything.
In general it seam that Cairns becomes a smart city and going cashless is the bigger picture. I have listened to the council meeting and one person said he had not used cash for years. What a pity!
No pocket money for the kids.
No small change for a homeless.
Not a couple of dollars for a food stall along the way.
No way to give a kid a few dollars for mowing my lawn.
No possibility to pay at a remote mountain hut without reception.
It will look weird to see a Lucky fountain full of credit cards In the Future.
Please don’t destroy our heritage and keep cash alive!

Kurt Wagner (Trinity Beach, 2023-02-23)

#29

Cash is an integral part of any transaction. The exchange of physical notes/coins with the seller is an optical witnessing that the transaction is complete and that both parties are satisfied with their transaction!

R D (Gordonvale, 2023-02-23)

#30

I use cash. I don't see why I need to pay a bank fee on top of the dump fee. I don't carry a card

Andrew Wilson (Cairns , 2023-02-23)

#32

Cairns Citizens for keeping cash alive to hand over the information I provide on this form to those who have power on this issue.

Kevin Niesler (Bentley Park, 2023-02-23)

#33

I believe cash is money
I only want to pay for services not bank charges

Susan Prince (Barron , 2023-02-23)

#34

I don’t want to lose cash it is legal tender and should be accepted everywhere. The more people who give into this rubbish are giving the government more control over us. WAKE UP and let people pay cash

Tammy Carswell (Mooroobool, 2023-02-23)

#35

I am signing cash is legal tender in this country

James Long (Manoora, 2023-02-23)

#38

I strongly oppose a cashless society. We should all have the choice to pay in any way we chose. I do not wish to have anyone else controlling my money and how and when I can use it or access it.

Jackie Nakovics (Cairns, 2023-02-23)

#40

Cash payment is legal tender and should be accepted by government agencies.

Jason Heatley (Kuranda , 2023-02-23)

#41

Cash should be accepted at the council facilities. Instead they are now card only and charge card fees...

Jordan Richter (White Rock, 2023-02-23)

#42

We should be able to use cash - it is our currency ! Not everyone has a card available to them !

Karen Heber (Cairns, 2023-02-23)

#43

I would like the option to pay with the legal tender... Cash

David Whitehouse (Edge Hill, 2023-02-23)

#44

As a Government body, the CRC should have to accept our country's legal tender

Sean R (Stratford, 2023-02-23)

#49

Discrimination free bring back cash payment option. I only use cash...

Voski Voski (Cairns , 2023-02-23)

#51

We need cash in our society, going totally cashless is not good for business. Cash is still legal tender and until such time that it isn't, we need cash. Thinking that you can catch COVID from handling money....what about the receipts they give you, what about the fact that they touch everything and hand you contimated paper.....get real and get a life!

Julie McClelland (Cairns, 2023-02-23)

#52

This cashless push is just so wrong - costs are skyrocketing along with inflation - the banks need to looked into

Jane Miller (Palm Cove , 2023-02-23)

#53

Cash is legal tender in Australia, and any move to eliminate this form of transaction is an assault on our right to barter and trade with any individual when and where we want. It is also another move towards total control over its citizens by keeping track of all transactions just like authoritarian regimes like China are doing already.

Anthony Barr (Brinsmead, 2023-02-24)

#54

I don’t carry cards in my wallet

Bobby Ivezic (Cairns, 2023-02-24)

#55

I am not supporting CBDC.
Whats happen in case of emergency when the council advises to have cash, because nothing else is available. Look at NZ and Turkey.

Gyorgyi Katzler (Brinsmead, 2023-02-24)

#56

I don’t agree with the policy.

Bronwyn Minshull (Cairns, 2023-02-24)

#57

Cash is King. We need to halt the progression into a cashless society.

Michelle Postlethwaite (Cairns, 2023-02-24)

#58

I’m signing because I am abhorrent to think of a cashless society

Cheryl Ling (Manunda, 2023-02-24)

#59

While there are advantages to going cashless, such as increased convenience and reduced risk of theft, there are also potential drawbacks, such as exclusion of those who don't have access to digital payment methods and increased risk of privacy breaches.

One of the main arguments for not going cashless is that it can exclude people who do not have access to digital payment methods or who are not comfortable using them. This can be particularly problematic for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, the homeless, and those with low incomes. In addition, a cashless society can be vulnerable to system failures or cyber attacks, which could disrupt the entire payment system.

Furthermore, the use of digital payments can lead to increased tracking of personal data and potential privacy breaches. While most payment systems have security measures in place, there is always a risk that personal information could be compromised. In addition, the ability to track transactions could be used to monitor and control individuals' behavior.

Ultimately, whether or not to go cashless is a complex decision that depends on many factors. While there are advantages to digital payments, it is important to consider the potential drawbacks and ensure that everyone has access to the payment methods they need. A balance between digital and cash payments may be the best approach.

Sonje Rosie (Redlynch, 2023-02-24)

#60

I like cash. What happens when the phone lines are down or you lose power? There’s no swiping your phone or card or watch or whatever. Cash should still work. It’s ridiculous that some places are not accepting our currency.

Craig Shankland (Bayview Heights, 2023-02-24)

#62

We are losing the ability to teach kids the value money

Sharyn Burton (Redlynch , 2023-02-24)

#63

I want the ability to pay cash at all of these facilities, as banks are charging more and more fees for an increase number of transactions made. And last time I remember I paid for a ticket with card at CPAC/online, they actually charged me an additional fee.

Anna Radzimska (Cairns, 2023-02-24)

#65

I don't want the ability to use cash taken away from us.

Katrina Hannagan (Kamerunga, 2023-02-24)

#66

Cash is a legal tender & there should always be a choice to use it when we please. I DO NOT agree with Digital currency.

Leanne Merkel (BRINSMEAD, 2023-02-24)

#67

It is inappropriate and unacceptable for a local council to restrict residents access to council facilities. These facilities are public property, they do not belong to the council employees.

John Duel (Trinity Beach 4879, 2023-02-24)

#68

Cash is in every small businesses and entrepreneurs interest, Cairns Council I'm not angry just really disappointed that an elderly Mayor can just be so disinterested in this matter...begs the question how many other matters are inconsequential. When you lose interest in traditions and what the people clearly want it's really a time to reflect whether you are a helper ie expert decision maker or a hindrance in that role.

Sarah Sutherland (Cairns , 2023-02-24)

#70

using currency in non digital form is directly linked to freedom of choice, when it comes to how it is used and stored. One of the very pinnacles of freedom is private property rights and cash is a direct form of private property, in my pocket in my control.

ward clements (Aloomba, 2023-02-24)

#71

Council have repeatedly refused to accept that this is an issue, have dismissed my concerns and produced dubious justification to the Ombudsman when I took my complaint there.

Andrew Schaper (Mooroobool, 2023-02-24)

#72

These changes have NOT been widely accepted by the majority, as this petition will show. Bring back the choice to pay cash at all Cairns Regional Council Facilities.

Jo Morieson (Cairns, 2023-02-24)

#74

I’m signing because cash is legal tender

Vicki Ryan (Cairns, 2023-02-24)

#75

Cash is legal tender and I choose not to contribute to the banks’ power grab through fees

Tess Murphy (Freshwater, 2023-02-24)

#77

I believe the council should accept cash at all its facilities.

Daniel McCarthy (Redlynch , 2023-02-24)

#78

We should be able to use Cash as it is legal tender simple as that.

Tracey Anderlini (Cairns , 2023-02-24)

#79

I want to pay cash

Tina Horsfall (Edmonton, 2023-02-24)

#82

We need to maintain our system

Eyles Matthew (Cairns, 2023-02-24)

#83

I like to keep my CC use to the minimum..
Plus what's wrong with cash?
Don't trust your employees?

Mark Quinlan (Westcourt, 2023-02-24)

#84

As a rates paying member of the community I object vehemently to UNELECTED BUREAUCRATS who are HIGHLY PAID PUBLIC SERVANTS and therefore being PAID TO SERVE THE PUBLIC that are making very poor decisions that affect so many in the community, and without the knowledge of many of the elected Cairns Regional Council Councillors who are responsible for representing the constituents. What is the point in voting for representation, if the UNELECTED BUREAUOCRATS are the ones making the decisions?
The UNELECTED BUREAUCRATS have an obvious intent to remove cash payments for all facilities, and yet the Council website states clearly that cash is a necessity in the event of a natural disaster: "cash as essential in an emergency kit as "there could be electricity, phone and internet outages;" https://www.cairns.qld.gov.au/community-environment/natural-disasters/household-emergency-kit (accessed 24 February 2023). Additionally, the PDF that is available for download and printing at this web address https://www.cairns.qld.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0007/494854/Household-Emergency-Kit.pdf (accessed 24 February 2023) has cash listed in the top row of items to have in a household emergency kit with water, food and a battery operated radio. This indicates that cash is very important in the event of an emergency.
I am not sure how many are aware of this, but this applies to all card payments
https://www.finder.com.au/debit-card-surcharges (accessed 24 February 2023):
DEBIT CARD SURCHARGES IN AUSTRALIA FEBRUARY 2023
“Whenever you buy goods or services using a debit, credit or prepaid card, the merchant will incur its own bank costs for processing that payment. Some merchants will include those processing costs in the fee they charge for goods and services, but others will cover their costs by imposing a surcharge on card-based transactions”. Currently the information provided by Council from https://www.cairns.qld.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0012/510330/Cairns-Regional-Council-Resource-Recovery-Facility-Cashless-Change-Factsheet.pdf is: “Will I be charged a merchant fee for using EFTPOS? Secure EFTPOS payment will be available with no minimum spend or surcharge”. I wonder how long it will be before Council passes the surcharge onto the public, now cashless is the only way to pay at tips and buy back shops, and whether they are already doing this at other venues such as libraries and entertainment facilities.

Julie Mudry (Cairns, 2023-02-24)

#85

There should be a choice, period.

Marty Seubert (Cairns , 2023-02-24)

#86

Cash is legal tender and should never be refused for the convenience of the people there to provide a service

Shane Larkin (Cairns, 2023-02-24)

#87

We need to keep cash for all transactions because fully digital only enhances Governments Banks etc. Not the people.

Peter Littler (Cairns, 2023-02-24)

#88

I'm signing this because it is my Human Right to choose. It is my right to be an autonomous entity. You have no right to grab this.
You are acting and behaving unrightfully. Like an ordinary criminal.

Katrin Costa (Cairns, 2023-02-24)

#90

Freedom to choose. Cash is legal tender.

Lyn Chalmers (Bayview Heights, 2023-02-24)

#91

I believe everyone should have a choice, what about all the people who can't get a credit card, for what ever reason, this is a smoke screen for people to get screwed over, choice over nothing.

Rhys Mitchell (Cairns , 2023-02-24)

#92

I don't agree with cashless councils. I am affected when I go to Cairns on a weekly basis

Jeanette Lamb (Djarawong , 2023-02-24)

#93

Council is a public service staffed by servants and the systems are to serve the public.

Limiting the system to a payment system that requires extra payment is unethical and not in the interest of all the community.

I don’t have a plastic credit card so I expect if it goes this way all my devices are free.

Of all the things to spend public time money and resources on, this is pathetic.

Melinda Norris (Cairns, 2023-02-24)

#94

We must be able to use cash in all circumstances.
Paying via card can remain an alternate option

Sue Kennard (Cairns, 2023-02-24)

#95

I love cash.
It involves a clean, quick, efficient and fee-free effortless transaction.
I don’t have to go checking my bank statement every time.

Paul Dali (Westcourt , 2023-02-24)

#96

Consumers should always have access to a payment choice. Cash is reliable and inclusive and when technology fails, cash is there

Sherryn Hannagan (Kanimbla, 2023-02-24)

Cash is legal tender

Carla Lane (Cairns, 2023-02-24)

#102

The Smithfield dump should accept cash and other places also. Cash is still legal tender.

Shane Griffiths (Cairns, 2023-02-24)

#103

I predominantly use cash due to low Credit Card security. Cash is legal tender in Australia and it is illegal to deny the option of using Cash to pay for goods and services within Australia..

Andrew Squillari (Mareeba , 2023-02-24)

#104

I would like all forms of legal tender accepted for payment. In times of natural disaster or conflict, cash will be the only working medium if electricity is no longer present. Cash is needed for continuity of service, electronic only is all eggs in one basket, very short sighted

Tim Staier (Gordonvale , 2023-02-24)

#105

I like to have options.

Catherine Dennis (Manunda, 2023-02-24)

#106

Holding and exchanging physical cash teaches children the value of money. Lots of councils facilities are used by children and young adults.

I have the right to pay for any service with Australian currency in my own town, and country.

Craig Rodwell (Cairns , 2023-02-24)

#117

As cash plays an integral part in a functioning democratic society. Councils do not have the privilege nor should have the option to manipulate the spending characteristics of the constituents within their town..

Cameron Butchart (Kewarra Beach , 2023-02-24)

#120

We should all have the choice to pay cash or card for our goods and services especially from our local council and also cash is legal tender and should not be denied by any business.

Beryl Moimoi (Cairns, 2023-02-24)

#122

I believe you should be able to choose how you pay for any goods or services

Jaimelle Whittaker (Freshwater, 2023-02-24)

#123

How dare the Cairns Council think they can stop anyone from using cash

Amanda Harvey (Earlville , 2023-02-24)

#124

I agree should be cash option !

Knight Nadja (Brinsmead, 2023-02-24)

#125

In a blackout, cyclone, extreme thunderstorms, wild weather knocking out the Internet phone service and computers, we can survive using cash, we can also support CCC as I do by using the paid parking over free parking to support the facilities they supply in the city.

Pauline Coop (Bingil Bay, 2023-02-24)

#126

Because I believe in cash still being accepted

Martin Arenas (Cairns, 2023-02-24)

#128

I‘m only using cash nowadays as this is legal tender in Australia. Not being able to use all Council services because Council doesn’t have the skills to offer modern payment options such as cash would evidence of failure to adopt to a modern society.

Ralph Loesche (Trinity Park , 2023-02-24)

#130

I don't want to lose access to cash.

Igor Pershin (Yorkeys Knob, 2023-02-24)

Darryl Kasch (Kuranda, 2023-02-24)

Adam Tormey (Parramatta Park, 2023-02-24)

#138

You need cash;
When there's a power cut
When there's a computer malfunction
To ensure you don't discriminate against the elderly and people who don't understand or choose not to use technology
To promote choice
To promote freedom
To promote inclusivity
To prove you are not part of a global agenda

Yana Appleton (Albany, 2023-02-24)

#139

I don’t agree anyone should be forced into only one type of payment. Digital will be used to track, trace and control.

This agenda needs to stop. Cash is a legal tender and as a democracy we have a right to exercise our freedoms to pay as we wish.

Sandra Failla (Newell, 2023-02-24)

#144

Cash should always ve accepted for any and all transactions at all times!!
It should be an option to oay by cash.

Corey-Kym Routledge (Brisbane, 2023-02-24)

#145

Cash is a useful way to give children their allowance. Without the use for cash teens without a bank account cannot catch a bus (a necessary transport mode if they get stuck and need to get home but can't wait for a lift) or buy drinks or food from CPAC if they've gone with friends. Besides cash is legal tender, by not allowing people to use it the government are acting unconstitutionally.

Sara Belik (Cairns, 2023-02-24)

#146

I am totally against a cashless society. Cash is our right for legal tender.

Colin Ivory (Gold Coast , 2023-02-24)

#154

I'm signing because if it happens there it will happen here

Stephen Marr (Rockhampton , 2023-02-24)

#155

If we become a cashless society then we will have lost all control of our own finances which will then allow the banks to have complete control and we will be charged for every single transaction we do. No more cash in hand jobs, no more cash in bday or xmas cards, no more saving money under your pillow. We will be living in a fascist world.

Carissa James (Newcastle , 2023-02-24)

#156

No government ot banking institution should ever have that much power period!!!!

Gari Van Den Bos (Cairns , 2023-02-24)

#158

Cash is imperative in keeping payment options available to diverse economic groups. Gives people choice and is legal tender

Christian Stamos (Brisbane, 2023-02-24)

#160

It is not my preference to not be allowed to pay by cash nor is it more convenient to me to not have a choice to pay by cash. Even if it is displayed that council facilities don’t take cash generally there is no option to go somewhere else that does take cash to get the same service There is no other council. Everyone should always have the choice to use cash.

Liz Harris (Cairns, 2023-02-24)

#161

Hate seeing banks make more money and don’t like the control corporations and governments now have very sad world we are in

Gillian graham (Yorkeys Knob, 2023-02-24)

I’m signing as cash is king. We cannot rely on digital!

Amanda Gregory (Apple Tree Creek, 2023-02-24)

#163

I am sighning because I am sick of the CORRUPTION and the LIES , cash is legal tender and who gives you the right to say it isnt . You are all a disgrace and will be held accountable for your crimes against the People and our way of life SHAME ON YOU ALL

Kevin Tier (WhiteRock, 2023-02-24)

#166

It is my preference to use cash. It is also more convenient to me to use cash. Council should not be able to take away this option for those who choose to use it

Edward Fitzgerald (Cairns, 2023-02-24)

Cash is a legal tender. Everyone is free to use it when and where they choose.

Going cashless is an evil agenda against the benefits and convenience of the community.

Steven Hughes (Gold Coast , 2023-02-24)

I want to keep cash in our society. Covid is not a reason to take it away.

wendy lenehan (babinda, 2023-02-24)

#178

it is outrageous that any council go cashless. You quite obviously are way out of touch with you constituents. Even today there are a lot of people who don’t have internet. You are supposed to provide a service to your people and you are just showing your true colours of Socialism/Communism.

Barb Wood (Bowral, 2023-02-24)

#180

Cash is legal tender and should be accepted everywhere.

Mick Zammit (Brinsmead, 2023-02-24)

Isaac Freeman (Freshwater, 2023-02-24)

#184

I support the people of Cairns wanting to use cash, legal tender, to access public facilities

Eric Belcher (Bellbird park, 2023-02-24)

#186

We’re screwed without cash in energy shortages and it’s the freedom to spend our money freely as we choose. Cashless society will see total control and no privacy handing the banks and elite control over our every day spending and how we live. Save cash! Screw your digital systems.

Hayley Wilson (Newcastle , 2023-02-24)

#189

Cash is King!

Olivia Walford (Kuranda, 2023-02-24)

#190

Cashless is taking away our rights and privacy. We will be constantly monitored. The banks make money off every card transaction. Not to mention dangerous in times of power outages.
Our freedoms can be removed by turning off a switch.

Julie D'alcorn (Kewarra Beach , 2023-02-24)
