STOP heavy trucks smashing Polly Shortts hill

Ward 37 PETITION
BANNING OF HEAVY VEHICLES

On 31 May 2015 the Comrades Marathon will be televised across the country. At the end of the race is the infamous "Polly Shortt's" Hill.  Viewers will see that the tarmac on this iconic hill is being smashed to pieces by heavy trucks which are using Polly Shortt's to access the Mkhondeni Industrial area from the N3 WITHOUT passing the weighbridge at Market Road. They leave the N3 at Exit 65 (Lion Park) or at the Ashburton offramp and use old Main Road (R103) and up Polly Shortts, avoiding the weighbridge. Vehicles leaving Mkhondeni are going down Polly Shortt's. This road was never intended to carry these HUGE vehicles. If these trucks are not stopped immediately, the cost of repair will be MILLIONS paid by us taxpayers. We urge the KZN Provincial Legislature to ban heavy vehicles from Polly Shortt's and make them use the Market Road offramp past the weighbridge.

We are not 'anti-truck' but see no point in having public infrastructure smashed just so that a few (overweight?) trucks can avoid a weighbridge. This damage is avoidable if we act now.

We therefore request:-
1. That more signage prohibiting the use of these roads by vehicles over 10T be erected at all the intersections
2. That proper, on-going law enforcement be carried out.
3. Adequate barriers where necessary.
