Stop unnecessary flying! Swedish universities need to practice what they teach

Svenska lärosäten behöver ta sitt ansvar i klimatomställningen och minska sina utsläpp, genom att aktivt arbeta för att minska de flygrelaterade utsläppen.

Mellan 2019 och 2020 minskade svenska universitetens flygrelaterade utsläpp med otroliga 87%. Nu när världen öppnar upp igen är det förväntat att utsläppen återgår till eller rentav överstiger den tidigare nivån. Vi kräver att universiteten aktivt arbetar för att förebygga detta. Utan fullgoda åtgärder kommer de värsta konsekvenserna av klimatkrisen inte kunna avvärjas, vilket vi alla tar skada av.

Vi menar att utsläppsnivån efter pandemin (2022) måste hållas kvar på samma nivå som under pandemin eller åtminstone inte överstiga hälften av 2019 års utsläppsnivåer. Därefter fortsätta minska med 16% årligen för att ligga i linje med den senaste forskningen inom koldioxidbudgetering. Vi ser digitala möten som en fortsatt självklar del av forskningsverksamheten framöver. Läs gärna vårt brev för att förstå varför det är fördelaktigt, inte minst för forskarna själva samt för forskningens generella kvalitet och kostnad. Observera att denna namninsamling inte riktar sig till/berör studenters resande eller undervisningen på lärosätena.

Som studenter vill vi kunna vara stolta över det lärosäte där vi valt att utbilda oss vid. Vi kräver att forskarvärlden börjar leva som den lär!

Swedish universities need to take their responsibility for climate change and reduce their emissions, by actively working to reduce aviation-related emissions.

Between 2019 and 2020, the Swedish universities' aviation-related emissions decreased by an incredible 87%. Now that the world is reopening, it is expected that emissions will return to or even exceed the previous level. We demand that universities actively take efforts to prevent this. Without adequate measures the worst consequences of the climate crisis will not be averted.

We argue that the emission level after the pandemic (2022) must be kept at the same level as during the pandemic or at least below 50% of the emissions measured in 2019 to tackle the crisis. Thereafter continue with an annual decline of at least 16%, to keep up with the latest research in the field of carbon budgeting. We view video conferencing as a continuous natural part of the research community onwards. Feel free to read our letter to understand why it would be beneficial, none the least for researchers themselves and for the general quality and cost of research. Please note that this petition does not concern students' travel or teaching at higher education institutions.

We students want to be proud of the university were we have chosen to educate ourselves. We demand that the research community starts practice what you preach!
