The PUNO Charity Declaration on the Polish University Abroad

Preamble

We the undersigned present The PUNO Charity Declaration on the Polish University Abroad. It is the result of collaboration between Trustees, Members of the Senate and friends of the Polish University Abroad and is a response to the coordinated attempt by the University’s former Rector and his followers to undermine the University and to capture its extensive intellectual property and 80-year heritage for a private company.

 Declaration

PUNO is a British Charity that provides education to all sections of the community but mostly to students of Polish origin who are desirous of obtaining higher education above the level of a Master’s degree. PUNO is regulated by the law of England and Wales, and its Deed of Trust (with a Statute as a subsidiary internal regulation). Its charitable structure enables members of the PUNO community to contribute to the commonweal in a specific manner, to enjoy academic freedom and offers a salutary example of how education and research can be conducted without undue bureaucracy. We, trustees, and members of the Senate, recognise that we are custodians of a proud academic tradition and have obligations to act in the best interest of the charity. We acknowledge that the specific charitable model of the University enables the charity to fulfil its mission and allows the university to be passed on to the next generation as a community asset. We, friends of PUNO, recognise the value of PUNO’s contribution to the wider community and acknowledge the paramount importance of its charitable status. As such, we Trustees, members of the Senate, friends of PUNO condemn the sustained and coordinated attempt by the former Rector and his followers to bypass Charity law and the University’s Deed of Trust and to replace PUNO with a private company that they have created. We call on people of good will to support PUNO’s Board of Trustees and Members of the Senate who seek to maintain PUNO’s autonomy and independence, to uphold its academic tradition, preserve its heritage and sustain its charitable status so that the University may continue to contribute to the common good in the years to come.
