Update shoe policy at Upwey High School

Petition: Allow All Black Runners as Part of the School Uniform

To: Upwey High School

We, the undersigned students, parents, and community members, respectfully request a revision to the current school shoe policy to allow students to wear all black runners (sneakers) as an acceptable alternative to hard leather shoes.

Why This Change is Important:

  1. Comfort and Foot Health
Hard leather shoes are often uncomfortable for students, especially during a full day of classes, physical movement, and outdoor activities. All black runners provide better cushioning, arch support, and flexibility, reducing the risk of foot pain, blisters, and long-term health issues

  2. Enhancing Student Comfort and Well-Being

Although the traditional preference for hard leather shoes has been common for uniformity, there is growing recognition that student comfort is crucial for effective learning. Consider the following:

Ergonomic Benefits: Comfortable, well-cushioned footwear can help reduce foot fatigue and the risk of musculoskeletal strain over long school days.

Improved Focus and Engagement: When students experience fewer distractions from discomfort or pain, they may be better able to concentrate on their studies.

Many modern soft sneakers are now designed with advanced materials and engineering that offer excellent shock absorption, flexibility, and slip resistance—all while providing the necessary protection. This suggests that they can meet or even exceed the safety criteria set out in the guidelines

These points align with the Department’s overall emphasis on creating a supportive and safe learning environment.

  3. Affordability
Leather shoes can be expensive, and many families struggle with the rising cost of living. All black runners are often more affordable, durable, and accessible, easing the financial burden on parents while maintaining a neat and uniform appearance. Budget leather shoes are also not ideal for our children.

  4. Safety and Practicality
Runners are designed for movement and provide better traction and support, reducing the likelihood of slips, trips, and falls. This is particularly important in wet weather and on uneven surfaces around the school grounds.

  5. Modern Standards
Many public schools across the country have already adopted more flexible shoe policies that prioritise student comfort and practicality. Updating this policy reflects a progressive, student-centered approach while still maintaining a professional school image.

Our Request:

We propose that Upwey High School allows all black runners (with minimal branding) as a valid option in the school uniform policy. This simple change will increase student comfort, improve safety, and reduce financial strain without compromising the school’s values or appearance.

By signing this petition, we express our support for a shoe policy that reflects the needs and well-being of students while maintaining school pride and professionalism.

Thank you for considering this positive change.
