Huff Pedestrian Safety Update

2014-05-20 03:50:44

Please Join us May 20 at 5 pm Capital Improvement City Council Meeting to support the traffic improvements suggested by this petition.  The following item is on the agenda:

The proposed funding sources for a $897,000 pedestrian and bicycle safety improvement project at the Grant Road/Phyllis Avenue/Martens Avenue intersection, Project 15-31, Modifications to Grant/Phyllis/Martens Intersection ($597,000 C/C Tax), has been changed since the March 18 Study Session to take advantage of the capital funding Google has committed to provide in Fiscal Year
2014-15. Project funding sources now include C/C Tax ($597,000) and Google funding ($300,000). Staff will also be submitting applications seeking State Active Transportation Program (ATP) funding for this project. If the City is successful, any grant moneys received will be used to replace City C/C Tax and/or Google funding designated for this project, allowing those funds to be reprogrammed for other capital project needs.

We have a chance to make this happen - hope to see you there!

Subject: Update: Pedestrian / Traffic Safety near Huff
To: Huff

Along with others, I attended and spoke at the City Council Study Session on Tuesday in an effort to help secure prioritization and (hopefully) funding for the Martens/Grant/Phyllis intersection proposal. Together, we reminded the committee of the crossing guard accident last year, provided findings from our research (over 200 cars dropping off kids daily), shared personal stories of close calls / minor accidents, and showed recent photographs (faces blurred) of dangerous driver/pedestrian situations (including cars blocking cross walks, kids / parents jaywalking with oncoming traffic, illegal u-turns, cars stopping in the middle of the road to unload children, cars driving on the wrong side of the road, cars creating 3 lanes where only 1 exists, and streams of children walking on non-sidewalk side of the street).  While this was just a preliminary meeting, a majority of the City Council members acknowledged the safety issues and appeared supportive of the project.  The council is expected to discuss again May 20 and vote on June 10 (subject to change).
Our neighborhood committee is working with Safe Moves, school administration and Public Works to make additional improvements.  So far, we successfully extended the red zones on either side of the school entrance/exit to allow greater visibility.  As Craig Goldman highlighted in the PTA meeting this morning, we are also trying to educate parents & children to always walk on sidewalks v. in the street, and to encourage less driving through organized walking groups (which is only possible if parents feel children are out of harms way).  Stay tune for more information.
If you have not done so already, please SIGN the petition (add comments too!) and continue to pass along to friends, parent groups, class lists for older siblings and other community organizations.  We currently have over 200 signatures, but are targeting 100% Huff families.  In addition, please be a role model for your children - use crosswalks and sidewalks!

Thank you.

Sheila
