Complaint to the BBC about the Punk show cancellation

2014-08-26 00:54:20

Hi guys/girls I sent in my complaint to the BBC about the cancellation of the Punk show on BBC Radio 1 however a it seems quite a few people have complained about this issue so I was given the same reply as all the others who complained which means they didn't properly respond to my complaint or look at the petition.

Sorry guys this petition was unsuccessful.

Thanks to all those who signed it and for the support it's been given, I am very grateful for it and glad that I at least tried to save the Radio 1 Punk Show, as opposed to doing nothing and a huge 985 signatures is quite impressive and very appreciated.

Thanks again guys and girls for all the support.

Matthew Hegarty

The reply I received from the BBC was as followed:

Dear Mr Hegarty

Thanks for contacting us regarding changes to the Radio 1 schedule and I note you're particularly disappointed with the decision to axe the 'Radio 1 Punk Show'.

We’re sorry if you are unhappy with the changes that have been announced, but like other areas of the BBC, Radio 1 and 1Xtra have been asked to make savings as part of wider BBC’s financial challenges. This is due to the fact that the TV Licence fee has remained frozen for some years meaning in real terms the BBC's income is reducing year on year. In Radio 1 and 1Xtra’s case this means a number of staff working behind the scenes will be made redundant, with nine presenters also leaving the stations.

We do appreciate this is likely to disappoint fans of those presenters concerned, but the stations have done their very best to minimise the overall impact on listeners. Ben Cooper, the Controller of Radio 1 and 1Xtra has explained that, "These cuts to our budget are hurting, it means I have had to make some tough choices and say goodbye to some friends and respected colleagues." He went on to add, "I believe these new schedules continue to innovate, reflect and celebrate the UK’s youth and music culture."

Mike has been part of Radio 1’s presentational team for over ten years and we will miss the passion he brings to the Punk Show. Both Daniel P Carter in Sunday's new Rock Show, and Huw Stephens with his new 10pm show, will continue supporting punk music, although we do understand you would have preferred it had we been able to keep a dedicated programme on the station.

Thanks again for contacting us, we value your feedback.

All complaints are sent to senior management and programme makers every morning and we included your points in this overnight report. These reports are among the most widely read sources of feedback in the BBC and ensures that your complaint has been seen by the right people quickly. This helps inform their decisions about current and future programmes.

Kind Regards

Tony Rogers
