City of Ekurhuleni - Maintain our Cemeteries

We the undersigned residents of the City of Ekurhuleni, herewith petition the City Manager, Dr Imogen Mashazi, as well as the MMC of Enviromental resource and Waste management, for urgent action at the City's cemeteries.

Graves, headstones and remembrance walls (cremation ash niches) are not only being vandalized, but in some areas used as toilets. Crime is rife because of the lack of maintenance of the grass and vegetation. Citizens cannot visit the final resting place of their loved ones as graves are overgrown and have collapsed. This is a cultural travesty that requires urgent attention.

We call on the city to:

  1. Maintain the cemetries, ie. Cut the grass and trim the vegetation as per City’s Policy standards.
  2. Security to be enhanced at all cemeteries.

We reserve the right to escalate this petition to other spheres of government if the issues are not adequately addressed.
