It's crazy that this bridge was allowed to open without any safety features at all. No hard shoulder, no lighting, no speed restrictions and no warning systems in the event of a breakdown. Am sure any of the above would not have led to the sad deaths of a mother and son today!!

I feel that it should only be a 50mph speed limit with average speed check cameras fining those that exceed the speed limit. Also, when using the Dartford Tunnel, you are not supposed to change lanes. This should also be introduced to make this road safer.

I no longer live in Kent, but crossed this bridge many times. I always did so with caution, especially near the wide bend at the top. Drivers need to be aware, and go slower, specially in bad weather

The Sheppey Bridge has a poor design meaning that drivers cannot see what traffic is over the top of the ridge until they reach it. If people are driving like a maniac or there is low visibility, drivers cannot see other traffic until it's right in front of them. This has led to horrific accidents & now two lives have been lost unnecessarily. Something needs to be done and soon! For every Islander's safety!

Something must be done , thus tragedy has touched so many lives . The speed limit is excessive for a piece of road with no hard shoulder . This combination is far too dangerous for the thousands of motorists risking their life with every journey over the bridge , in fear they may breakdown or their might be fog or crosswinds etc. Don't let another innocent mother & her child loose their life before this danger is amended !!

I have used this bridge on a daily basis since the day it was opened!! Speed cameras and a reduced limit aren't the answer here, lighting is needed at night or in fog but there does need to be some sort of wide margin put in place in case a vehicle stops on the bridge also I'd ban anything over 7 tonnes from overtaking on the bridge as the summit can be blind to smaller vehicles and if a HGV overtakes beyond the summit then there is the potential for a problem. I'd also add as concrete barrier in the central reservation to eliminate potential crossover incidents as the divide is quite narrow

They need to lower the speed limit too its far too dangerous I live on the islandbut I refuse to use that bridge

As we have all said lighting should be a must and speed cameras but most of all a hard shoulder so upon breaking down we are able to get off main rd and out of way! Can not believe that it was allowed to be built without safety to mind! The matrix board are never put on could of had a warning to a vehicle broken down but no that's to bloody easy!

Put a 50 mph speed limit and cameras on the bridge. When you break down on the bridge there is no where to go but sit in your car, it must be terrifying. There needs to be a hard shoulder built or warning signs erected to warn people like on the motorways.

Speed restrictions & message boards would help

Personally think it's rediculous that a bridge of that size would be built without an extra lane either side for cars that breakdown etc!!

This is a reply to post #16, What a load of bollocks, its not safe what happens if you break down at night and the battery is at fault no lights on your car no lights on the bridge either is an accident waiting to happen. There isnt even a traffic camera near by to monitor or see if someone has broken down to then get someone out quick to shut the lane down ie police which would help and it should have a speed limit most big crossings do. Fair enough I agree people do speed which is the main hazard but the bridge is not safe and for your information I dont use it because of it.

If you break down on this bridge the odds that you will die are very high ! One of the worst designed high speed bridges I've ever seen !
