Latin is a basic educational tool as well as a gateway to much of modern literature and life! I am moderator of schools Latin in South Africa, where it is now sadly diminished, and I feel it should not be allowed to disappear., especially not in a country that has offered so much to the world.

Latina on kiistaton osa klassista ja humanistista sivistystä. Latinan lakkauttaminen olisi törkeä virhe yliopistolta ja ryvettäisi pysyvästi Jyväskylän yliopiston imagoa. O tempora, o mores!

Latina on eurooppalaisen sivistysen sydän. Arjen sanastosta moni sana juontuu latinasta. Latina on usien huomaamaton arjessa vaikuttava tekijä. Latinan opiskelu edistää ajattelua ja helpottaa eurooppalaisten kielten oppimista.

I think the Finnish latinists have done and awsome job with News in Latin and recordings of Tangoes in Latin and so on. I am not a latinist myself but a fan only.

Latin is a very important language to understand our European civilization and languages. It is the basis of Roman languages and a large quantity of English vocabulary is of Latin origin. And of course in Finnish we have lots of Latin loan words. In these days when technical development is worshipped we should not think that Latin is a dead language and is of no use. Just start learning and see!

Latin is great! Humanities are really important and we need opportunities for people to study historical languages at a university level. We need more humanity in the world right now. Not less.

The strong profile of the Latin section has contributed enormously to the international status of Jyväskylä University over a long period of time; it would extremely short-sighted to abolish such an essential part of the university's reputation.

Latin is a very important basic "language", but important as a brain training in general if you learn it the right way

Latin is important for lingual reflection - especially as to systemic looks at languages - as well as for cultural skills and qualities.

Do not destroy the possibility for your students to understand and interprete the older texts of Europe within their historical scope in their original language!

I signed this petition because I firmly believe that abandoning our old languages also means giving up our classical heritage, in other words throwing civilisation into the bins of history.
