North Polk alum,

As you may know, Coach Tron Scott has recently been under scrutiny for his coaching style. Parents question not only his techniques, but also how he treats his players. He is said to be a “bully” and plays “mind games”.  The article also says that Coach Scott coaches through “fear and intimidation”. Parents are demanding that North Polk remove him from his position as head basketball coach, and the media would love nothing more than to make this a bigger story than it needs to be.

Tron was my coach for 4 years, and went out of his way to help me develop the right skills, mentally and physically, to succeed at the game I love. Those who know Coach Scott know that his passion is introducing and teaching the game he loves to kids of all ages. I believe with complete certainty that any pressure or aggression he directs towards his players is simply to challenge them, to make them mentally tough, and to push them to be the best they can be. I can recall numerous times when Coach called me out on my performance. Was he trying to embarrass me or make me feel belittled? Absolutely not. He knew what I was capable of and he expected that from me every minute of every practice. I challenge you to find a good coach in any sport that doesn’t push their players in this regard.

I’ve been graduated from North Polk for 7 years. That’s a lifetime. Still to this day, I still look forward to seeing Coach Scott, talking basketball, and reflecting on the good memories we made in that gym. I feel bad for the kids that feel he is too hard on them. It’s a shame they will never know the feeling of giving it their all, fighting through adversity, pushing themselves mentally and physically to be the best player they can be, and the feeling of overcoming. Win or lose.

I don’t know that this petition will persuade the school to allow Coach to keep his job. But it may help. By signing you are simply stating that you stand by Coach Scott, you believe in his intentions, and appreciate all he has done for you.
