Keep our Streetlights Working

The Democratic Alliance and the residents of Alberton are calling on MMC Leshaka Manamela to account for streetlights which have not been functioning for weeks, in some cases even months.

Following correspondence sent to MMC Manamela’s office via the DA Ward 38 councillor, initially on 19 July 2023, and a subsequent follow up 26 July 2023, the MMC or his office has not responded to the request to give indication on what is being done regarding the streetlight backlog in Ward 38.

Through a recent Ward 38 service delivery tracker, 49.3 per cent of all issues reported related to outstanding repairs of streetlights, and of these complaints, certain streetlights have not been repaired for more than three weeks, in some cases months. This is despite the service level indicating that repairs on streetlights should take 24 hours to repair.

The DA believes the non-response of the MMC impacts directly on the safety of Brackenhurst and Brackendowns residents.
